PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, MAY 5,19 82, WHITBY FREE PRESS GO to Oshalwa b>y 1985: <lu ,..Herr .ema GO Train service to Ajax, Whitby and Oshiawa could happen as early as 1985 accordiûg to Durham Reglonal Chairman Gary Herrema. Herrema, told the AJax-Plckering Board of Trade last« week that lie expectia the. provin- cial government to an- nounce the extension of the service to -Oshawa from its present ter- mninus in Pickering sometlime after it brings down its 1982 budget in a few weeks. The chairman told hie, audience that the City of Oshawa's reluctance to support the extension a few years ago was a major delaying factor. > "Years ago, Oshawa .said 'Leave us alone, we're a communtty on our own,"' Herrenia said, "Now tliey bave to recognize the Metro Toronto' communlty. If tliey'd cornei earlier, we'd bave had more clout than, we bave now.y, He also sald that .,a study had sliown that two more trains could be added to the electri- fied track that already provides a five train ser- vice. The study, whlch took a year to complete, was undertaken by Bell spent $460,OOO ,to ugaephone Canadian National Rail- ways, tlie Ontario Mlnistry of Transporta- tion and Communica- tions and'GO Transit. The Project was oni- ginally estlmated to cost some $50 million. How- ever, current specula- tion puts the cost at, $75 million. Herrema's dlaim may not be ail that wrong as Durbam West MPP and Ontario Minister of Rev- enue George Ashe was recently quoted as say- ing that the service could be a reality by the mid-1960's. Upgrading teleplione service in Whitby cost. Bell Canada $460,000 in 1961 accordlng to local manager Orma Lyttle. Lyttle told Whitby Town Council i a letter last week that the money was spent not only-n the growth of tlie system but on teleplione modernization as well. She also told coundil that Bell employs 782 people in this area and its, annual payroll Is over $14.9 million. The telephone giant also paid more* than $429,000 in gross receip- ts taxes to Whitby in 1981, Lyttle said. This tax is a special levy paid by the telecommunica- tions industry. Bell's capital expendi- tures for 1981 were over $1.4 billion with $955 million devoted to meet- ing customer demand., The company also spent $264 million' for builQ ings, tools, vebicles and other goods as weil as $182. million for im- provements to existing facilities. The company also improved its rural ser- vice through the reduc- tion of the nuniber of teepioeson a party line to a maximum of four. Across the pro- vince, Bell employed 29,800 people who ear- ned over $6W0 million The following are the results from last week's play at the Whitby Duplicate Bridge Club. The Church Sp'eaks (~. Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL- ASSOCIATION By THE REV. KEITH A. ELFORD Pastor Whitby Free Methodist Churcli The recent "Rally for Life" on April 25 brings the whole question of "life issues" in front of us again. Ail of us made a decision about the "Right to Life" concerns. Either we are pro-life or we're not. If we chose to waffle on the issue we cast our lot with the latter. But how do you make Up your mind about this topic? The pragmatist says, "We must be prac- tical. Let's flot waste time, money or resources." The humanist says, "Let's do what seems best to us. We are intelligent people'with. highly trained minds. We c'an discern what is best. It's our world and these are our bodies." But the, Christian, has to ask, "What does God have to say abo ut this? Has He declared Himself in the Scriptures'?" Two Biblical principles speak definitely to the issue. First, god foreknew -every person who lias been, is' being, or-will be created. (Consuit Ps.. 139: 13-15, 'Is. 44:2, Ephesians 1: 4, Romans 8:29). Your conception and birth was not a surprise to Him. Secondlyý, God has given us the privilege of exer- cising our free will within the limits of His Sov- ereignty, but He holds everyone responsible by con- sequences for how he chooses to live. We cannot sin without consequences. It's true in the case of promiscuous behaviour that may resuit in an "un- wanted" pregnancy and it is also true in t.he case of abortion which is a category of murder. In the af- termath of sin, thereare attending consequences - many of them painful, some tragie and al of them ugly. The bottom line is that we cannot- always know what is best. That is why we must be comforted by the fact of God's foreknowledge, and warned by the promise of. judgment upon ail sin. Reflect on the following four case histories. Judge for yourself how "pro-Abortionists'" would have counselled. 1. We have a young couple with two chldren living in extremely oppressive circumstances. The lives of-the children are in constant danger. Wlien a third child is born, it is discovered that he lias an embarrassing speech defect. Had he been aborted, Moses wouldn't have llved. 2. We have a young single girl who is pregnant. She lias no visible means of support. Her boyfriend claims the child la not lits and threatens to break up the relationship. Had Mary gone for an abortion, Jesus Christ wouldn't have been born. 3. We have a street womnan who bas been raped by a dock worker. Should skie have an abortion? Then Leonardo Da Vinci would neyer have painted. 4. Finaily there's the Beethoven family. The mother bas T.V. The father lias syphilis. The flrst child was stillborn, the second deaf, the third blind, the fourth liad tuberculosis. If "1number five" had been aborted, Beethoven would neyer have written a strain of music. Witli God there are no midstakes, no throw-away people, and no disposable lives. TYPE WR UT!RS ADDING MIES a CALCULATORS SALES e SERVICE,@ RENTALS- = s __ý M7 Whitby bridge reouits
