Get tough onforeign armkers:.Ra.e Students at, Whitby's Anderson Collegiate were exposed to the On- tario New Democratie Party's new l"Rae of sunshine" last week. Bob Rae, newly eleet- ed leader of the provin- cial NDP, used the op- portumity to criticize the government for causing almost ail of Canada's economie problems. Starting off with the automobile --,industry, Rae called for the intro- duction of Canadian content laws in an effort to get Japanese- auto makers to invest money In this country.' He also . 9-id that government policy - or the lack of it - 18 pri- marily responsible for the current auto sale slump. The federal govern- ment should be requir- ing the manufacturers to invest a larger share of their profits into re- search and development in this country. "We have to produce a car thatis generally competitive of the world market 'and something we can be proud of, he told his audience. "lWe have 70 years of experience making cars. We can't just walk awar from that and let others beat us." The governiment should be getting toughier on foreign 'car makers, Rae continued, by limiting the number of cars they can seli in Caniada. "If any car manu- facturer wants to sel here - be it from Japan, West Germany, the U.S. or anywhere else - then he has'an obligation to produce cars in this country," hie added. "lIt's not right to have Japanese .selling 50 many cars in this coun- try without puttîng any- thing into it." And the only way to achieve this is the intro- duction of Canadian content laws. "We need to get a larger share of the mar- ket with cars produced by Canadians," Rae said, "and to do this we drastically' need con- tents laws to make off- shore manufacturers build cars.here. " The .NDP leader, a nd former MP for Broad- view-Greenwood in the. House of Commons said that this is a "disgrace" Classified advertising selis Cali 668-6111 today terest rate policy.
