Speaking to You By SCOTT FENNELL, M.P. (PC - Ontario.) There is nothing that infuriates me more than members of the Liberal Party and the NDP dlaim- ing that conservatism is for the, rich and privileged and that conservatives have no compassion for the poor. At a recent policy conference of My party, Joe Clark summed Up 01W attitude: "ýThe greatest ene- mies of social justice in Canada are the Liberals and the socialists whose policies have driven away growth and destroyed hope in this country. " Conservatives believe that the problems in our economy today are due to the lack of a free market structure. Governments are big, and government regulations, licensing agencies and taxes permit mainly the big corporations to survive. The New Democrats and Liberals say that the solution is to make goverrnment bigger and more powerful. Con- servatives believe that compassion and social justice can best be achieved by freeing enterprise. If the.risk-takers, innovators and small business- es in our economy are smothered by taxes and regulations, everyone - including the poor - is hurt. We have to set the economic stage so that the talent- ed in Canada can succeed. These are the people who are bright enough, talented enough and hard-working enough to em- ploy other people. Unemployment isn't successfully fought by fighting employers. In Canada today, socialist policies are doing just that.' I like to think conservatism offers an alternative. Helping em-« ployers and small business means a better economy in the long run and that's better for everyone. Ap- plying failed and worn-out government remedies ovèr and over again, holding out false hopes over and over again, increasing taxes. over and over again, these are policies I have to classify as -truly cruel and uncompassionate.
