WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 1982, PAGE 5 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Metric commissioner defends imposedsystem item In the US. Dear Sir: Your newspaper recently carried a letter from Mr. Steve Yeldon, presi- dent of Measure Canadian, urging your readers to pressure their- pro- vincial govern- ments to undo the federal metric con- version program. Canadians are free, thank good- ness, to form what- ever opinions they wish about metric, and to do whatever they wish to try to forestall it. How- ever, as a member of Metric Commi- ssion Canada, I would suggest to those inclined to follow Mr. Yeldon's advice that their credibility Is in Jeo- pardy if they try to dispute these facts: 1. The principle of metric conver- sion was supported by"'all parties in the House of Commons in 1970 and 1975. 2. In 1974 each of the ten provincial premiers said the federal plans were acceptable and conformed wlth tbe provincial metric conversion plans. 3. In 1976 and 1977 the House of Commons debated for eight days and- a House committee for another eight days and Parlia- ment eventually passed a bill which authorized the federal cabinet to issue an order-in- Club appreciates us Dear Sir: On behalf of the members of the Canadian Club of Durham Region may I express sin- cere appreciation for the publicity provided for our organization over the past year. Yours very truly, Marguerite O'Connor, Past President. council making only metric legal under the Weights and Measures Act. This order-in-coun- cil, authorized by the Parliament of Canada, was even- tually issued. 4. The only penal- ties for non-com- pliance are inthe Weights and Mea- sures Act, and have not been changed, and apply only to retail merchants. 5. Otherwise, Canada's metric conversion program has been fully vol- untary, organized and implemented by those directly concerned through 102 sector commi- ttees staffed by some 2,000 volunt- eers from the res- pective sectors. 6. AIl of the major nations of the world except Britain, Canada and the U.S. are fully metric. Australla and New Zealand started af- ter Canada and are finished. Britain is stalled, but must eventually move ahead because the children learn only metric in the schools and because EEC mem- bership requires conversion to metric. The U.S. is moving steadily ahead, on a fully voluntary basis. AI- though the U.S. Metric Board is being phased out, the Department of Commerce is taking up Its work, and th- at department ex- pects the metric system to be the "customary" sys- tem In the U.S. 7. For many years,. Canadian school children have been taught only metric, on the authority of the pro- vincial govern- ments. Cleo Mowers, Lethbridge, Alberta. - PRInTIN1G 218 HARWOOD A\/E.
