WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1982, PAGE 7,- Whitby has adequate ambulance serviice: owners. The, owners ef the Wbitby Ambulance Ser- vice say ý that they are more than able of meet- ing any emergency ln the Town cf Whltby. Bill Cocker and Derek Pearce made that state- ment last week in res- pense to concerns raised by East Ward Ceun- ciller Jee Drumm last month. .Drumm told Whltby Town Coundil that am- bulance services were- "stretched a littie too thin" if two emnergen- des occurred the same night. The couneillor ex- pressed concerns abeut the standby system used by local ambulance, ser- vices. In the event that ail of Oshawa's ambu- lances, for example, are tied up, then one from Whitby would take up a standby position on the Osbawa-Whitby tewn- lime. Drumm saidhe was dlsturbed about the possibity tbat a Whltby ambulance could flot respond te a local emer- gency because it was standby for Oshawa. However, -Cocker ,and Pearce say this Is net so. "Wh»en we go on standby, we're still on cail fer Whitby," Pear- ce said adding that they 6 usually bave the other vehicle on-base." Both men peint out that Oshawa bas. three ambula'nces, only two, ef which, are used after. 5 p.m. while Whitby bas, two vehicles on cail 24 heurs, a day.,' S"Whitbylias far bet- ter coverage 'for 'one- third of the pepulation wlth two vehicles," Cocker added. "They're not stretching thin in Whitby, if anything, they're stretching thin in Oshawa. " The Whitby Ambulan- ce Service currently employs 13 driver- attendants (includlng Cocker and Pearce) and boast an average' respense Uirne of 4.3 minutes which Cocker dlaims is one of the best in the province. >, ."Whitby has one of the fastest respense times in Ontario," he said. Cocker, aise said that standby and routine calls (transferring pat- ients te and from hospi- tais and related fadili- ties) are pushed aside when an emergency cal comûes through., Furthermôre, when one of Whitby's ambu- lacsIs on an emer- gency cail,ý the, other vehicle--will flot, take routine or standby cails until the emergency la over. Cocker and Pearce also peint out that after 7 p.m., Ajax bas only one ambulance operat- ing fer the entire Ajax and Pickering ares. 0 f, the 5,000 cails an- swered during 1981, only 1,000 of them were standby cals., Asked whether or not Whitby b as adequate ambulance coverage, Cocker relied, Iltruti* fully, yes.", Bill Cocker and Derek Pearce, ewners cf the Whi tby Ambulance Service (seen here.with-one of their twe vehicles) say that ambulance service in the tewn is more tban adequate to meet ils needs. They made that statement in respense te recent'comments made by East Ward Councillor Joe Drumm. -Free Press Staff Photo Museum open -longer for carnival By MARGARET MAY The Whitby Museum will be open extended heurs .threughout -the County Town Carnival.
