This tradîtional furniture is as comfy today as it was for our forefathers-, Dec Qrating ,With Mirrors One of the most cra- matic ways to enhance a home's decor is through the use of mirrors. Mirrors are particu- larly helpful in 'small homes, condominiums or apartments, ýwhere they seem to expand the size of areas. <Throughout the home, there are many strate- gic places for touches of mirrored surfaces. In the entry hall,, for, iu- stance, ' a handsomely framed mirror can help set off that table or rack in ahi inviting manner. In the living room, mirrored walls can open up the smallest seating area; the same holcis true for a"dining room.' In the bedrooms, mir- rored closet doors- can make an ordinary-sized room seem luxuriously spaclous and will also corne ln handy for checking hemlines, etc. Mirrored. shower doors are also available to, expand that very small bathroom. Besides 'creating a feeling of spaciousness, mirrors add a real note of elegance to their sur- roundings. Small ai- coves, such as those useci for dressing areas andi wet bars will espe- cially benefit from the use of mirrors. Decorating with mir- rors reflects an attrac- tive solution to today's small-scaled housing. Eulegant 1Illusion Enlarge a country dining room or any other room with mirror strips or "planks". They give the illusion of ad- ding length andi width to a room,, plus reflect light from windows andi lamps. Here, five pairs of strips, each 72" long by 8" wide, are cieverly frrnaed in pine with a practical ' storage/dis- play sheif above. The mirror strips can'easily be cut to custom iength with'a standard glass cutter andi installec with decorative buttons that. fit into pre-drilleci hoies. Wall frieze, in tandem with an attractive ceil- ing, can perk up the up- per reaches of a room. This ornate fabric frieze, applied with vinyl paste, nicely coun- tepoints the ciassic sim- plicity of the ceiling with a tile-anci-grout look. Glenn«Careèy Custom Upholsiery Imc. Manu- facturers have lIong used decals to cratle mood and style in achieving a "hand- painted" look on wood furniture - and s0 can you. Ail you need is a piece of furniture which bas been given, a coat of paint or varnish and a bit of -kmaginatioôn, to st.art. Decals corne in a wide variety of colors and de- signs to suit most decorating styles. Before applying the decals, cut apart the de-., signs on each sheet, and' experîment with differ- ent effects by fastening them to the surface with bits of masking tape. When you decide on an arrangement, clip the decals in water and ap- ply. Adding a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent to the water will help the decal slide off easlly for precise positioning. Allow a day for .dry- ing, then add a coat of clea-rvarnish -to protect the designs from bumps and scratches - and pre- serve your furniture's handsome, new "hand- painted" look. Photo WaIls Reserve one wall for photograpbs taken eaéh year on your family jaunt. Framed photos will not only record happy moments, but are also an inexpensive and very personal way- to decorate. If you have a large space available for Wal decors, plan to take many photos and select your best ones-for fram- ing. Have your favor- ites blown-up to a variety of sizes, some horizontal and some vertical, and plan an in- teresting.wall group. A ChiId's Room When shopping for furniture for a young- ster's room, select pieces that will "grow" with the child. Cribs that can be con- verted to junior beds are good examples of furni- ture that is designed to accommodate .child- ren 's various stages. Decorating Tlp For any substantial project, make a simrple scale drawing of the area where the work is to be done. "One inch equ als one foot" is a good working scale for designing built-in furniture, and for details, "'one-quar- ter inch equals one foot" is good for designing en- tire rooms and addi- tions. Smal Booms A too-small room can be made to seem larger with the judicious use of wallpaper. Small-scale patterns that are light in color will help to open up that small room. ~F FAM ic 50 RoitrdContractor on UFFI Romedial Measures Reg. No. 1029.
