PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 27, 1982e, WHITBY FREE PRE£SS United Way hel'ps Scouts Scouts Canada is a forward looklng organi- zation dedlcated, to preparing todaiy's, boys and'youth to take their place as mature parti- cipating aduit members of the community. The Scout Movement, founded in England in 1907 is funded largely by the United, Way. Scout- ing offers boys aged five to 23 years the chance to join one of fivè pro- grains. These programs in- clude the Beavers,,Wolf Cube, Scouts, Venturers and the Rovers and pro- vide opportunities for mental, physical, social and spiritual develop- ment. The importance of working and playing in group situations is stressed and, achievernent is recog- nized in aIl five pro- grains, except the Beav- ers, -by the awarding of badges. There are 2,800 youths registered with the Boy Scouts in the districts of Oshawa and Whitby, helping, to, ensure parti- cipating citizens for this area in the future.' This concern for the community by the' Scouting Movement can be seen from the Scout participation in such ac- tivities as the "Trees for Canada" prograin, in which over 300 Cubs, Scouts and Venturers planted somre 15,000 seedling trees in Oshawa this past spring. This year, Scouting throughout the world celebrates its 75th anni- versary with the slogan "The Spirit Lives'On". The optimism of this slo- gan is- shared by Canada's 300,000 Scouts who are working to bet- ter' theinselves, their future and their coun-> try.
