However, I seek office because I think I have viable skills not precedent the other can- didates. This being my ability costs, I chose to be part of the Financing of Edu- -cation group. The other members of that group expressed confidence in' my ability by selecting me as their chairman. Our report is now writ- ten and will be going to the Board in the new year. It wilI be made public at that time. I also sat on a Board committee studying the Ministry's proposed changes to the high school system. I sat on the Board's Family Life Committee. 1 As Education Chair- man of the Durham Council of Home and School Associations I co- to provide research materlal on present edu- cational matters. These skills will be, essential Pr ocesslng Bill 82 (min. special education). We wil have many finan- cier's from the other areas in the region; let someone with a differ- ordinated the prepara- tion of nuinerous pre- sentations to the Board. As vice-president of that organization I had the opportunity of meeting with and making presentations to the school principals in the varlous parts of the region. I have enjoyed work- ing to improve the edu- cation of the children in the Durham Region, but it is now time that I begin to participate in making the decisions rather than just trying to influence them. With your support on Novem- ber 8 1 will be able to do that. ent perspective provide the balance needed. The top issue is to provide the best possi- bl e education to aIl stu- dents to ensure that they maximize their poten- tiai. We must be up-to-date without losing the past improvements. To do this, we must be imaginative, futuristic and bard working.- This doesn't mean over- spending or under- spending; just hard work and deter- mination. There are problemns in our schools that prevent the student from receiv- ing the best possible education. The problems. embrace the issue' of pupil-teacher ratio being the'highest in Ontario, and spending being one of the lowest in Ontario. There is alsp a problem of teaching materlals and lack of textbooks is common. These are only a few of the concerns I have. I hope they are yours too. I cannot change' any- thing alone. I need your support, and not only at election time. 1 amn not a-politician, just a con- cerned neighbor and taxpayer. Maybe in Whitby your voice will be heard for the ful three years.
