Big Brothers help Helping young boys cope with life is the aim of the Big Brothers of Oshawa-Whitby. Young boys from fatherless homes often have a more difficult time ad- justing to the world around them. A Big Brother gives the boy someone to look up to and from whom to gain encouragement and self-confidence. The Big Brothers, who are funded in part by the United Way, start their thirteenth year of ser- vice in the area this year. The program in- volves "matching" male volunteers over 18 years of age with youpg boysunder16 to give the young boys someone to relate their problems to. Big Brother appli- cants are well screened before being accepted as a volunteer. Their personality traits are noted as well as their in- terests so that they can be matched with a boy most closely matching himself. The matches are then taken under regular re- view by a staff case- worker who monitors the progress of the pair. The matches spend three or four hours a week together on a "one man-one boy" basis. A United Way funded agency, The Big Brothers help fill an in- valuable place for many young members of our community. So when the United Way canvasser comes to your door, give generously. Remember, "it's needed more than ever before. Man robbed at home A Whitby man was the victim of an overnight robbery at his home November 4.
