You and Me By RUTH COLES Twice i the past few weeks we have driven ever westward to Elora, one of our favourite haunts. Per- fect weather, mild, clear, air but sometimes ti the distance a haze created no doubt by the warrnth. We are so blessed with the change of seasons, each one' as beautiful i-its own way as the others. There is sornething very special about late autumn. The colours are magnificent, the shades and tories of browns are'exceptiorial ând so too are the varied beiges of many mixeài to the soft greens of the coni- ferous trees. Many of the weeds are striking and proud as they stand. tl until the first heavy frost strikes them down.' <Other than the odd field of autumil wheat which at this time is a brilliant greeri, rost 0f our greens are rather duil and lifeless. But when the snow cornes they too wil stand out. Soil content causes the vivid colours in ariy parts of the world including Aber- ta, due, I arn told, to more potassium i the earth. What has happened to ail the crops we used to grow? Wheat, buckwheat, rye and oats al of varied hues and shades which made the landscape so beau- tiful. Now other than the very odd field of autumn wheat the corri has taken over, acres and acres of it. North of Toronto there seem to be hundreds of ar-' tesian weils and rnany properties have ponds and how attractive they are. None seem ito be fenced in and this makes thernmore desirable as part of the landscape. They telrne there are problems associated with maintaining ponds and sometirnes they have to be drained. I was visiting friends just outside of Owen Sound not long ago and their pond was going through a face lift. How ugly it looked, a hole i the ground*ful of slippery dlay and rnud ernptted of al that beautiful water., Our delight with our friends' 145 year old home i Elora has no bounds. The bouse is undergoing ex- tensive repairs after quite a few years of neglect. Buildings, like people, deteriorate very quickly when not cared for. However this one is blossoming with tender loving care.
