is very reasonable. 'Between You and Me ( >M ByRUTHI COLES W e have builders and destroyers always in o>ur midst, and as -of now the well known West Toronto railroad station has fallen underteae What a, hideous example qf. wanton 'destruction and no doubt bunigllnig along the way. There has been similar.destruction right'across the province including Whitby. Swrly a t this late date many should ýhave learned a lesson; once des- troyed,- gone forever. We no longer have the men witb the expertise to build these or. to. rebuild'these oldtimers. There generally was a lot of special hand work whieh went into them and the Whitby'Psychia- trie Hiospital is a prime example of this. In a small village of about three thousand, better things are happening due to foresight'and'construc- tive -tbinking. An old miii, a five storey grist mil which is one of the'few in Ontario still standing, bas been reniovated and is now the EloraInn. Built in 1859 by early Scottish stone masons beside the Grand River it stands. Massive 100-foot walls some fi ve feet thick at the base rise above the mighty Grand. Right. in the centre of a pre-con- federation village which draws people from aIl over the world, it welcomes you with a feeling of stability and strength. As.a country inn it is superb. The meals are ser- ved with charm and grace in a beautiful setting. The food is excellent and, in this day and age, we feel it Tax evasion An Ajax company was convicted of tax evasion and fined $29,601 in Ajax provincial court last Thursday. Dimitar Enterprises Ltd., which operates the Ranch Steak House and Tavern, on Commercial 'Avenue, in Ajax, was given one year to re-pay $29,601 in sales tax it suppressed between 1977 and 1979. OfficiaIs for the Ministry of Revenue say the company was in- vestigated -after an audit revealed néarly 58 per cent of the provin- cial sales tax collected by the company hadn't been turned over to the government., Judge Sam Murphy convicted the company of wiJful tax evasion, and ordered it to repay the money over- a one- year period. Ministry officiais say the company entered taxable food and liquer items into the cash register as food items. This showed increased food sales for the com r: pany,_ and reduced the amount of sales tax pay- able to the Treasurer of Ontario. Bridge The following are the results of last week's play at the Witby Du- plicate Bridge Club. North and South: Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Evans,. 120; Mrs. John Frost and Mrs. Bruce McCol, 104%h; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Davies, 102; and, Mirs. P. Spratt and Mrs. Don- ald Wilson, 98. East and West: Mr. and Mrs. Leo Vrengden- hil, 100%; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wharrie, 102; John MeLean and Don Tither- ington, 99½; and, Derrick Aistein 'and Paul Beischlag, 98%. The results of dupli- cate bridge play are reported each week in the Free Press..11 WIthi n the Inn a warm and hospitable blend of 'the oldý and the new, modernlzed for comfort and ser- vice. Massive old roof beams and,,.crackling log fîres are a part of the charmlng scene and there are always people. l'in sure it's a rare occasion whfen there are'empty guest rooms summer or winter. In this tlniy village there are always people, and it's not unusu'al to see old friends and others you know you have -met somewhere. The same applies to the Inn, familiar faces in the lounge and the diing, room. A quiet charming atmosphere not always found as yox travel about. NoW- this, village is blessed, with Crozier Taylor, the lnnkeeper and his wife Mary, who is generally found' in the Country Cupboard on -the property Which she operates. A popular gift shop funl of unique goodies and always a must for us whenever we are in.town. Mr. Taylor has been involved* in the renovation of many buildings including the Pillar and'the Post Inn in Niagara-on-the-lake and the restoration of thre homes in that town. I understand the Taylors have neyer been as hap- py and satisfied as they are now with the MUI. Mr. Taylor says, "The Mil really belongs to the town; we are the custodians and we want people to feel at home here as we do." As an ex senior vice-president of a large insuran- ce company in Toronto, Mr. Taylor at one time tra-, velled as much. as 500,000 miles a year across Canada and the States. So for this reason he feels he basa,,pretty1 good idea what people want in accom- modation, and dinfing quality. A master at, las "cdraft"! the Millkeeper as heis known watches over his guests and satisfies their needs with a dedicated. and well mannered staff. The know-how and expertise is paying off in this small village about one hundred and twenty miles from Whitby. Would it was 80 in our town. What astouzids me are the number of people retiring in Elora. Close to Guelph, about thirteen miles, they are not very close to Toronto and aIl it has to offer. This does not seem'to deter them even though most of themn are rather cosmopolitan in their way of life.
