George 'Stanford, manager of maintenan- ce and construction for the board, pleaded guilty to the charge of faiing to report an in- corne totalling $139,893 between 1977 and 1980. Provincial court. judge Norman Edmnond- son ordered repayment of $30,911 owing to the federal governnient, and levied a fine of 100 per cent-(or $30,911) to be paid witbin 90. days of tbe conviction. Stanford must also pay interest on the amount of taxes evaded. If payment of the fine is not remitted witbin 90 days, Stanford faces a one-year lau sentence. Revenue Canada reports that Stanford received payments fromn contractors in re- turn for services in re- spect to contracts witbin tbe Durham Board of Education. Stanford directed the payments to be made to his wife Muriel, who owns- and operates Muriel Gray Interilors. Stanford reported only bis- salary from the Board of Education in the four-year period. Muriel Stanford did report the payments as income, but claimed un- related expenses again- st this income.
