WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 26, 1983, PAGE 15, Writer finds heavenly Chinese food h own back yard By ROXANNE REVELER Free Press Staff I love Chinese foodi Although 1 amn not an ex- pert on the subject, I love to eat it. Everyone you speak to bas their favourîte spot to pick Up a quick treat or go out to dine. Before now, 1 must admit 1 would drive ail the way down to Pickering to pick up what I feit was the best food i the area. That bas changed. Last week I found my- self with a party of people who know their Chinese food. I don't mean the usual- stuff that I tend to order such as chop suey or egg foo yong, but the real stuff. 1 learned that the cui- sine usually found in tbis area is Canton, from southern China. This food is quite mild such as chop suey, chow mein, guy ding, and moo goo guy pan ... always favourites of mine. This night I was introduced to Peking cuisine from northern China which is also relatively mild, Szechuan cuisine from thewest which is quite spicy and Shanghai cui- sie from the east which is kind of in the middle. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. .I started off with your proverbial egg roll. This egg roll was like no other I had tried before. It wasn't stuffed full of bean sprouts as expec- ted, but with finely shredded Chinese cab- bage, celery, carrot and pieces of chieken. The batter was so light and crispy, and the filling so spicy and good I wished there had been more than one each ordered. I had left the ordering to the other members of the group due mainly to my ignorance. Every- thing was beyond belief. Honey garlie wingsr were just dripping with 1 honey as promised but1 were soggy for my î taste. 0f course, whatc can you expect when they are drenched withe so much honey. I was 'a told their barbequedC wings are crispy ande delightful so I must trya them another time. h Sweet and sour chick- r en balîs have neyer been a favourite of mine. e: They are usually soggy a the middle drowned in a gelatenous red goopy sauce. What a refresh- ing change. There was a thin coating of batter covering a large piece of chicken meat and it was very crispy. Just a mere coating of sauce to en- hance, not kill the flavour. After these starters I couldn't believe it. I thought my luck had to run out sooner or later. Not so. Knowing my hubby and I had not tried variations of Chinese before (as a matter of fact "Sir Picky" whom, you have ail met before will not eat anything save spare- ribs and rice and per- haps the odd sweet and sour something), our host ordered a little bit from each category in the specialties section. First there was Jumbo banana shrimps ($5.95). I don't know what they did that other restau- rants don't, but the re- sult was exquisite. The shrimp were butterflied and very large. The bat- ter was thin, just cover- mng them and* fried to a golden crisp. From Shanghai cuisine was ordered ' "Huppy" ($7.50). The take--out menu describes this as a melting pot and it sure was. As I can recaîl there were water chest- nuts, broccoli pieces, snow peas, carrot slices so thin they were like tissue paper, onion, celery, mushrooms, THE GOLDEN GATE, 107 Brock Street South Whitby 668-8321. Ajax-Toronto chicken, shrimp, BBQ pork and some veggies I still haven't figured out. I thought nothing could surpass this but I was wrong. From the Szechuan cuisine came "'Gun- Shiao Beef". Well I could have easily eaten the whole container. At $7.50 this was a bargain. Paper thin slices of the tenderest beef, literaily melting in your mouth were cooked- in a sauce that I can't figure out. The menu says slightly hot barbeque sauce but it was much more than that. It came surround- ed by pineapple pieces oh a bed of shredded Chinese cabbage. "Sir Picky" was in his glory over this one. Knowing that my hubby likes duck, our host ordered, what else but "Emperors Duck" from the Peking cuisine ($5.95). A large contain- er jammed with chunks 0f roast duck about two inches long and an inch wide was covered in a light sauce. This did nothing for me because I do not care for duck but others who tried it gave it praise. Instead of plain boiled rice was had ordered "Golden Rice Bowl Fried Rice". This was stuffed with' shrimp, chieken pieces, barbe- qued pork pieces and ?kcM bits of egg. Delicious. Everyone ate as though it was their last meal. Everything was 80 good. Even hubby dear is now a fan of Chinese cuisine. Was this some elegant Toronto eating esta- blishment? Heck no. Right here i the area. I -must' admit I had not noticed it before, but it bas apparently been open for not quite a year now. It is-called "Gold- en Rice Bowl" and is located on Highway 2 right opposite from the Oshawa Plaza, just to the west of the Bola- hood's sporting goods place. It was formerly a Mr. Donut and does not have a large sitting down area. A few tables seat about 10 with another dozen spaces at stools. Their big bu§i- *ness, I guess, is i take- out in the evenings but I don't know- why more people in the area don't try them for,. lunch. Their food is great and their lunch prices are ridiculously low. From il a.m. to 3p.m. you can eat in, or take out, six variations of lunch in- cluding chicken chow mein, sweet and sour spare ribs, diced vege- table and almond, bar- bequed chicken wings and chicken fried rice.
