The Churc'h Spea'ks Sponsored-by the WHITBy NMINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION By REVEREND JACK RONEY Rector, Ail Saluts' Anglican Church, Whltby Last year, one person dled every nine days M Our parlsh, for whorn -y assistant curate or I were responsible at the burial. The story is repeated at every church in Whltby Wo a greter or lesser de- gre. And wlth every death cornes the pain of grief Wo those left behid. Maybe it's a man who <ied leavlng a wlfe and chfldren behind. Perhaps a chlld la taken by disease or accident and two parents are overwhelme<j by their bass. A man lays his beloved wlfe in a grave after inany years of loving com- panlonshlp and he begins the lonely road of be- reavemnent. Children aiso experience bass of one, or both parents long before they 've reached the stage of marriage thernselves. Who do they turn Wo? Any of these bereaved? The undertahker certainly does'the early work in helping with plans for the burial. He'aiso assists ini follow up. A çlýergyrnan cornes to conduct the funeral, and W o ffer comfort to the bereaved. The minister, priest or rabbi may return later. But with a funeral every nine days, another visit can be delayed, crowded out, or even forgotten. Time flies by and I admit I don't always follow up. Who does? Have you as a friend called up a wà dow or widower, that couple you used to play bridge with, or bowl ln a league, or drive to Florida, or whatever? Or have you been to visit the one who Is left behlnd alone, or invited her (or hlm) to dinner at your home, or out to a restaurant? If you've been wlidowed yourself you'll know the need to get out, to be with a friend, and friends who wlll listen to you. That's why a group of the wldowed in the Whitby-Ajax-Oshawa area agreed to meet once a month to face honestly the 111e of being partnerless - wldowed. Every firat Sunday of the month the group called 'THEOS' meets at St. An- drew's Presbyterian Church, 209 Cochrane St., Whitby, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the proces of facing 111e again. Men and women arrive. Some recently bereaved less than sik months, others alone for two or three years or more. Sozne in their middle years, some younger, others older. They don't hedge around. They share their mutual challenges. They meet on common ground, and they inevitably help one another. Several clergy and undertakers have encouraged the widowed Wo attend. Others of you, now alone, may read this article and thlnk about turning up this Sunday at 2 p.m. in the parlour of St. Andrew's, Feb. 6e Wo face -ôthers who've been where you've been, and are looking up and ahead. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shail be comforted. " You may help by showing a widowed person this article. You can offer to drive a friend over, and return 90 minutes later W , pick them up. You could have difficulties as a widowed person yourself. Why flot visit 'THEOS'? They Help Each Other Spiritually. (That's what THEOS means.) As a priest serving a large parish with an average of one funeral every nine days, I know that 'THEOS' is he2lpmg where I have been able to do very little.
