Fe rs tf ht Brooin wiiL'%oman saves local- Chrissie McKinney has been ahead of her time for years. Long before organiza- tions such as the Ontario Geneological Society existed, she was piecing together the history of local pioneer families whose long forgotten graves were the only trace left of them. Now, after 37 years on the board of Groveside Cemetery in Brooklin, Mrs. McKinney has be- queathed the manage- ment of the cemetery to the Town of WhiUhy. She was honoured with a retirement dinner last week by the cemetery board. Her many years of dedicated work provid- ed a lifeline to the past for many local families. "There was a long time when those old cemeteries were forgot- ten," Mrs. McKînney says. "But the people in them were the ones who opened Up this part of the country, and we have a duty to remem- ber them. " What started in 1945 The Canadia,, wmov n,.i for pomni f inon as a secretarial position became a management and research job, and a labour of love. "The job was moon- lighting, 1 guess," says Mrs. McKinney, who was also a school teach- er in Brooklin. She came to the town in 1922 when her father, a Presbyter- ian Minister, decided to retire there. Her respect, for the pioneering spirit stemmed from being born in Alberta in the early part of the cen- tury. Her parents were themselves pioneers in the prospecting days near Peace River, Alberta. When the township of Whitby expropriated the land where Groveside cemetery lies in 1945, things were in a rather Slippin g sad state of affairs, Mrs. McKinney recaîls. "In most cases ail we had was a name.,We of- ten didn't know who was buried where, and if there was even anyone buried on certain parts of the cemetery. " Neyer a chur-ch affi- liated cemetery, Grove- side was privately owned before the town- ship assumed responsi- bility for it. Out of the chaos, Mrs. McKinney created reli- able records, often from diverse sources. "The members of that first board were mainly older mnen," she says. "And it was from their memories - that we pieced together the records. " Since retiring from ?FORM-S REGISTER, CON'rINuOuS, CARBONIZED & MUSC.
