To prepare for the canoe trip, the stu- dents, will begin a swvimming program at the Iroquois Pool this month, to be followed by canoe training sessions at the Nonquon Outdoor Education Centre and the Lynde Creek Marsh. The appeal of this club may also be found in the purpose of the club. Un- der Mr. McGary's lead- ership and with the en- thusiastic support of Mr. Wortman, Mn. Naw- rot, Mr. Williams and Mrs. Bernard, the Outers' Club provides training for the safe yet enjoyable use of the out- doors. The members participate in as many varied outdoor* ex- periences as possible, and develop skills which can be continued in adult life. Another reason for the club's popularity may Outer's Club be that any student from Grade 9 to Grade 13 can join. Past experience is not necessaryl I would suspect, however, that aIl three factors contri- bute to the club's tremendous success. In addition, Anderson bas many other school sports. We even have a school bowling team that is very competitive. Anderson's bowling team went to the Ail On- tario High School Tour- nament and lost by seven pins. There were six teams competing and they came in second place. Congratulations go to ail team members. The senior and midget girls volleyball teams played some 'excellent volleyball against G.L. Roberts but thev lost the matches. The juniors showed great deter- mination by winning three consecutive games. The senior, boys volleyball team bas one victory and two losses. Leading scorers at the present time are Geoff Williams averaging 18 points per game, Greg Gibson averaging .14 points per game and Cnaig Syderenko averaging 12 points per game. The junior boys are playing exception- ally well and they are undefeated in their league. The midget boys basketball team is showing progress also. Durham Region high school students have a chance to discuss their. concerns with world health leaders in Wash- ington D.C. as part of the first prize in 'Talk- Back', the 1982-1983 national high school essay contest. This announcement was made today by Alan Rae, President of the Durham branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, sponsors of this annual high school essay contest competi- tion. Open to high school stud ents in Grades 9 to 13, 'Talk-Back' invites contestants to write an essay dealing with any issue they feel could seriously affect thein life in the future. Essays are required to be 1,000 to 1,500 words in length and must be submitted to the C.M.H.A. Durham branch office no later than March 1, 1983. Local judges-will then select one essay to represent, the Durham Region, in the Ontanlo provincial competition beginning Apr. 1. Durham branch wil award the local winner $50.
