WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 1983, PAGE il F SPORTS WEEK Les Canadiens ]put on a show for Whi*tby fans It could be said that age and experience de- feated youth and vitality in Friday night's hockey battie between the Mon- treal Canadiens Old- timers and the Spirit of Whitby. But that's per- haps too grave a moral to be extracted from what was mostly just plain fun on ice. Les Canadiens An- ciens demonstrated that they haven't lost their finesse after leaving professional hockey for as long as 20 years. The Spirit of Whitby showed they could join in the fun with the best of the best hockey team in history. With a final score of 9- 8 in favour of the Cana- diens, the game provid- ed about 1,500 Whitby fans with two hours of entertainment and no smail amount of grati- fied hero worship. Referees Red Storey and Maurice Richard cailed the game as they saw it, which at times made some fans wonder if their eyes weren't quite what they used to be. Thirty-second penalties were handed out for such unorthodox infractions as "taking a Whitby lacrosse c lub is looking for coaches and trainers By TOM FRANK Speak up early; avoid the stampede 1 The Whitby-Garrard Road lacrosse club is getting orgamized for the 1983 season. At one point in the game, Storey dropped a face-off two feet in front of the Canadiens net af- ter accepting an on-ice bribe by the Whitby team. But the erowd ate it ail up, as the heroes of the greatest hockey regime in history strutt- ed their stuff on Whitby ice. Names such as Phil Goyette, Gerry Desjar- dins and Leon Richefort came alive to fans that spanned at least three generations of hockey loyers. Maurice "Rocket" Richard and his brother Henri spent most of the game signing auto- graphs by the boards. The youngsters who came out in droves to get a glimpse of the hockey legends weren't even a gleam in their grandfather's eye when Maurice Richard made hockey history. But it was obvious that many were put up to getting autographs by their eager fathers who stay- ed in the stands. When asked if he knew who Maurice Richard was, >one youngster said, "My Dad cails him the Rock- et Pocket. " A short min- ute later he ventured, "Well, who was he any- way? " Perhaps the greatest hockey player that ever lived, one who stilîs draws hundreds of eager fans more than 20 years after retiring from hockey. Brother Hemgni, sidelined with an injury, was no less lib- eral with his signature. The Spirit of Whitby played admirably against the crack pass- ing and perfect puck handling of the -Cana- diens. But when the Old- timers turned it on, they scored as many as three goals in one minute.
