Parking fines jump People who park il- legally in fire routes will be fined $25 following a council résolution to raise all fines for park- ing violations in Whitby. After a two-week delay in approving the 100 per cent jump in parking fines, council decided Monday to make Whitby's parking fines equal to other municipalities in the region. Meter fines will be r.aised from $2 to $4 if they are paid before 10 a.m. the next working day, and from $3 to $5 if paid after the discount period. Fines for general parking, parking on pri- vate property, stopping and standing will jump from $5 to $10. And park- ing in a fire route wil cost offenders a whopp- ing $25. Council rationalized the increase by saying it would serve two purpos- es, to cover the. town's cost in policing parking areas and to deter peo- ple from parking illegally. The only objection to the increase was voiced by Centre Ward council- lor Marcel Brunelle, who said he feels the stopping and standing violations should remnain at $5. "We're spending up to $100,000 in announcing that we are a tourist town," Brunelle said. "We ask themn to corne and smell the flowers (marigolda) and then we sting thein with a green hornet. "'* The majority of coun- cil, however, voted' in favour of striking parity with the rest of the region.
