PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 1983, WHITBY FREE PRESS Durham women mark Women 's Day A celebration of Inter- national Women's Day will be held in Durham Reglon on Marcb 5 at the Whitby Public Lib- rary from 1: 30 to 4:30 p.m. The theme for the day in Durham Region is "building bonds be- tween women." One goal of an International Women's Day celebra- tion is the sharin.g of in- formation on common goals and figbts of al women. Women may go about their figbt in various ways, but together they have strength as women found out when they formed unions such as the women employed in the needie trade in the lower east side of New York City in March 1860. The celebration on Mareb 5, 1983 18 for the women before us- who fought for the rights wbich we now often take for granted and for the sbared strength that will enable women of today to pursue finan- cial security, safe jobs, control of their bodies and more. The International Women's Day commit- tee began witb a core group of women wbo set the theme for March 5, 1983: building bonds. The core group contact- ed other women in the community in a first step to building those bonds. The women *and the organizations they represent concern themselves with sole support mothers, educa- tion for women, support for rape survivors and the figbt against' porno- graphy, more and better quality day care. "Individual Tax Planning" is the topie of a speech by Don Shaughnessy, C.A., of Great West Life Assur- ance Company. Sbaugbnessy will dis- cuss the framework for anaiyzing probiems and deal witb tax planning at three levels: vertical equity (setting up a family trust), horizontal equity and timing. Other topics to be dis- cussed are: buying a business, executing a Will, and divorce as related to the business situation. Don McKay of Whitby joined the ranks of municipal clerks wbo bave been certified for achieving bigh educa- tional, experience and service standards, tbe International Instîtute of Municipal Clerks an- nounced last week. In acbieving the designation 0f Certified Municipal Cierk, McKay became one of 93 clerks in Nortb America to be bonoured since the inception of the program in 1970. McKay has held the office of Municipal Clerk since 1980, and for two years prior be was employed as Deputy Municipal Clerk. He came to Whitby from the Township of Oro, where.be was Deputy Municipal Clerk from 1973 to 1978. McKay has a Bach- elor of Arts in Math- ematics from tbe Uni-ý- versity of Guelph and completed a tbree-year course in municipal administration at Queen's University in Kingston. The certification pro- gram is designed to beip clerks- improve tbeir performance, and to professionalize the of- fice of Municipal Cierk.
