In its 26th year, Lofthouse Bras has entered the field of high technology, producing brass parts for the microwave industry. Lofthouse Brass Manufacturing Ltd. of Whitby is taking one of the oldeat metals known to man and finding new high technology uses for it. Company president George Lofthouse, who started the brass forg- ing firm in 1957, is ex- ploring the applications of brass in the micro- wave industry. Mr. Loft- house is the author of several articles on the uses of brass in micro- wave technology. Among many other products, Lofthouse Brass produces brass "flanges" which are used as connectors in the microwave indus- try. The strength, machinability and high conductivity of brass makeé it a valuable metal i the microwave industry. With its entrance into the high technology field, Lofthouse Brass is diversifying ils opera- tions and looks forward to an encouraging and prosperous future in Whitby. Since ils beginming in 1957, Lofthouse Brass has grown from a small forging firm with two employees to a world r enowned company with 70 employees. Mr. Lofthouse, whose, background was in *tool and die making, design- ed the layout of bis shop as well as much of the machinery used there. He sits on the board of drectors for the Cana- dian Copper and Brass Development Associa- tion, and was the recipi- ent of Whitby's Peter Perry Award in 1980. Produets made at Lofthouse Brass can be found on* machinery around the world, and recently the company has been approached by Japanese, English and European companies to provide information about the brass indus- try. Last year, Lofthouse Brass made 100,000 block heater forgings for domestic automo- biles. Among other pro- ducts are plumbing par- ts and some aluminum forging.> The 20,000 square-foot plant on Hopkins Street in Whitby features 200- ton presses whlch pro- duce forgings that vary in weight from five oun- ces to five pounds. Lofthouse Brass con- tinues to expand its operation, and recently re-invested $150,000 in' new rnachinery at the plant. George Lofthouse, who turns 74 this year, predicts a bright future for the company. The cornpany's pro- duct line consists of reputable controls and instruments made in Canada,- Europe, and the United States.- Eastern Controls not only buys and selis, but also will repair, modify, design and maintain systems, controls and instruments to custom- er specifications. Among the company's products are timers, photo electric controls, limnit switches and tem- perature controls. Eastern's own pro- ducts are manufactured right here in Whitby by various ,companles.
