First City forges- ahead with, plans for Brooklin The past year saw in- creased p'otential for residential construction witb the approval of the Brooklin development in September, 1982. The bousing, develop- ment, which bas been undertaken by First City Development Com- m pany Limited, la expeet- ed to take place over tbe next 10 years and resuit in the construction 'of some 2,200 homes. -Fîrst City sees the Brooklin development as an integral part of tbe Durham Region urban areas. The develop- ment, says First City, shouid therefore be viewed as tbe putting in place of a well-to-do neighbourbood in tbe context of that larger urban entity. A bigb percentage of the demand for bousing in Durbam bas been for single family detached homes. Between' 1974 and 1978, there was some displacemnent of the single family home and new construction, First City says. Particularly in the Osbawa area, builders attempted- to substitute town bouse links and semi-detached homes. However, in the last few years, the single -family borne bas predomiated in new bousing con- struction. Witb tbe Brookli development, First City aims to satisfy a part of tbe Durham bousing market by providing housing priced for the middle to bigh income category. Lots wiil range from 70 to 100 foot frontage, ailowing for a distinc- tive range of bouse styles to meet the most discriminating teste at affordable prices for the range of incomes being served.
