In a prepared statement, Graham Field, wbo works at the jail, said management lias monopolized comentary on the crowding situation, leadlng to unbalanced. reports. "The constant tension and increased workload combine to produce 'a very stressful situation for ail the staff in the in- stitution, " Field said. The jail, whlch was built 25 years ago to handie 60 inmates, now holds 155, Field says. Jail superintendent Frank GlU told the Free Press two weeks ago the jail curently holds 133 lnmates. GIU said staff are "icoplnt" with 0ove- crowdlng, but if the situation becomes long term, problems among inmates and between lnmates and staff will erupt. The original capacity of the jail has been doubled by putting two lnmates in each ceil, a situation which leada to frustration among in- mates, Field says. "Consequently, the tension and frustrations thus overcrowdlng produces results in frequent conflicts among the ininates and confrontations wlth the staff supervising them, upon whom the irnmates seek to vent their frustration," Field said in Ids statement. Hie added over- crowdinîg means two inmnates must sleep in ceils designed for one, and 20 imnates spend their walklng time mn a space planned for only filie. Field says the union wants an immediate in- crease in the number of staff at the jail, and im- provements to existing staff training programs.
