Report from Q ueen'9 s Park ~I. By The Hon. George Ashe, MPP (PC - Durham West) Ontario Minister of Revenue Ontario ilaa bighly industrialized province which accounts for 49 per cent of ail Canadian manufac- tured products. The Ontario government, ini recog- nition of this fact, has taken significant steps to en- sure that the best technologlcal resources are avail- able to ail Ontario manufacturera. On several occasions, 1 have dlscussed the contri- butions of the Board of Industrial Leadership (BILD) to Ontario industries, and this week, I would like to highlight the techiology centres which have been established.under the BILD program.- Ontario's Teclmology Centres were established to accelerate the use of new technologies anid each centre is responsible for defining and promoting op- portunities for development in its speciflc field. The goal of the Technology Centres is to assist Canadian industries such as textile, footwear, automobile, farm equipment, and resource machinery, to regain International competitiveness through productivity gains made possible by computer andi robotica technology. By provlding Ontario manufacturera wlth access to technologlcal resources, productivity wiil con- tinue to improve and Ontario's industries wlll be able to remain competitive. Ontarlo's opportunities for export growth are very encouraglng. At the General Agreement on Tariffé and Trade (GATT) held in 1979, Canadian Industries were given increased opportunities to ac- ces foreign markets. Foreign markets were also provided wlth increased access hi Canadian domestic markets whlch wiil result i tougher com- petition from industrialized countries exporting high technology products and from newly in- dustrial ing countries denianding increased market access. To assist Ontario industries, particuarly the smaul-to-medium sized firmas, in deaing with the in- creasigly competitive situation, the Technology Centres have been strategicaily located in areas most likely to foster specialized industries. These centres, established under the BILD progieam (with five-year funding in the amnount of $96.7 million) include: Microelectronics Centre in Ottawa; Advanced Manufacturing' Centres - CAD/CAM in 'Cambridge, Robotics in' Peter- borough; Resource Machinery Centre in Sudbury; Auto Parts Centre in St. Catharines; Farm Equip- ment and Processing Centre in Chatham. On February 8 the sixth Ontario Technology Cen- tre was officially opened and currently ail centres are in operation, assisting Ontario industries to keep pace with the rapidly developing technology of the 8o's. * The Whitby-Brooklin Block Parents presented plaques to (lef t to right) :Don Cooper, Bruce Batty, *Ken Bray, and Wayne Bray.
