Marïa ge-Go -Round premieres to applause By TIM BAINES Staff Wrlter The marriage-Go. Round, a two-act comedy play, premier- eci at the Marigold Dmn- ner Playbouse last week to a well deserveci posi- tive response from the audience. The Play, which will holci centre stage at tbe Playhouse until June 18, is a study of a mono- gamous man (Paul Del- ville) wbo is forceci to contend with a flirting of a girl boss than haif kils age. Delville, played mag- nlficently by John Bay- lias, begins the play as the perfect kiusband. Be- aides being a Professor of Cultural Anthro- pology at the Institute of Advanced Studios, Del- ville bas an ideal relationsbip. He is very mucli in love with kils wife, Content, Dean of Women at the Institute. Tbey are awaiting the arrivaI of an old col- league, Nils Sveg, andi bis daugliter Katrin. Katrin arrives with- out lier father, saying that lie wil be sligkitly delayed in his arrivai. The monogamous bus- band is tested con- tinually for bis faitbful- ness te Content, by the r often scantily cbothed Katrin. -The perfect monogamous man may c not be quite so perfect. c Katrin, playeci by Jane Whitely in bier firstk prcOfessional production, ti is a difficuit dlsh for ti even the perfect man te t ignore as skie is literaily 8 bursting out of lier black negligee. P Content tkilnks that lier husband is up to some dlrty tricks behinci lier back 80 skie seeks counsel in the form of Ross Barnett, a lang- uage Instructor at the Institute. Barnett, play- ed by Terrence SMater, is the suave gentleman who bas coyly persever- ed after the affections of Content for many years. Hie laugkiingly offers to fly off to Bermudla with ber. ACT I The second act shows Paul begiuining to wilt at Katmin's advances. Con- tent becomos 50 suspi- cious of lier kiusband that skie is ready to re- turn home to, Boston to lier mother. As for Paul and Katrin ... weil tbey go off to a secluded spot and ... weil it's not meaily fair te, give away the ending. Simply, the play is a deliglit. The script is liglit, humorous andi moves along quickly. Especially effective are the repeated escapes of both Delvijies to simu- lateci podiums at the In- stitute. The action stops completely as one or the otkier go to the podium andi explain their inner- most thouglits. We not irnly see the play clevelop on stage but we can see inside Paul and Content's mincis. John Bayliss, in the lead role of Paul, does a tremendous job. He bas the part mastereci, riglit 1hêugh facial expres- Bions. Jane Wkiteley, as Katrin, appears a little nervous in lier first pro- fossional play. It is a tougli mole to step into but ail things consider- eci, skie bas done well. Skie does suit the stereo- type of the Swedish bombshell. Terrence Slater, des- pite infrequent appear- ances in the play, still managed to pull off the mole of the womanizing swinger who lends bis ears to Content's prob- lems. Louis Negin, the director, lias a bit show on kils kancis andibas successfuly added bis toucli. The Marlgold Dinner Playliouse, 419 Brock Street North, in Whltby, will be showlng tbe play once nigbtly Tuesday througki Frlday andi Sunday, and twlce on Saturday, until June 18.
