PEARL STREET As most of you are aware Pearl Street ia a one way street going north between Cassels Road and Baldwin Street. Some residenta have experiencec great dificulty entering Baldwin Street from Pearl Street for the past several years. It la very danger- ous and was inevitable that an accident would oc- cur. A request to change Pearl Street to one-way soutli was, discussed and rejected ln 1978 because the majorlty of residents on Pearl Street were flot i favour of that solution. A request te change Pearl Street to a two-way street was received by the Public Works Departmnent in January 1903 and the ensuing report dlacussed by the Operations Com- mittee. We were advised that making Pearl Street a two-way street was not a practical solution. Let-, ters were then sent te ail residents of Pearl Street and the businesses in the immediate area inviting thier Input to the situation. The input received from those who responded was thoroughly discussed and a suggestion te m4ge Pearl Street a partial two-way street wlth no access from Baldwin Street appeared te ha the most practical solution. A public meeting was then held in the Brooklin Communlty Centre te again discuss this solution wlth the residents. Although some were flot com- pletely satiafled It was deemed te ha a solution moot. acceptable te the majority of the residents and the Public Works Department and was accepted by Council. The money required te solve the problem, Is minimal especially when it aiso alleviates some contlnuous maintenance coeta. STREET SWEEPING The fact that Baldwin Street la not kept as dlean as downtewn Whitby la a continuous problem. The problem as it exiats right now la that BaldIwin Street ia a Provincial Highway and la not under the juris- diction of the Town of Whitby for maintenance, ex- cept for sidewalks and street signs. Brock and Dundas Streets are also Provincial Highways, however, the maintenance of the roads Up to Rossland Road are covered by a Connecting Link Agreement by which the munficipality is requested by the province to do the maintenance and the prov- incereimburses the town. .The Public Works records show that - they responded ý several times in early spring te com- plaints, however a late snow fail resulted in ad- ditional sand on the street. A permanent solution to this problem la required and a solution la presentlyf haing considered. GARBAGE COLLECTION The Public Works Department were requested by downtown businesses to pick up the garbage after 9 FLEA MARKET The_ Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Durham Region, will ha holding a flea market May 14 at Henry Street High School. Space la available for rent at a cost of $15. For this. price,- you will receive a double park- ing space in the school parking lot. The flea market will get underway at 9 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m. a-..when the stores were open. The routes are piesently planned for the garbage lni this section to be piced Up by 9:30 a.m. 'and 10: 30 a.m. at the l a test. here have been no complainte to myseif or the Public Works Department that this service was flot adequate. The Public Works Department are prepared to pick, up that- garbage at 7:30 a.m., however, that Isoflot always convenient for the store owners. I am n ot trying to defend the Public Works Depar- tment, 1 arn simply trying to emphasize that if a problem does exist theni a proper understanding of the situation and proper discussion could probably rectify the situation. I explalned the situation regarding the Brooklln Development in an earlier article. At that time I presented, the facts - any other suggestions are inaccurate innuendo and without menit. I arn stili available to discuss these or any other concerns at any time and welcome this opportunity to do so.
