Laecrosse action Novices- Win By TOM FRANK The second exhibition mini-series hosted by the Whtby-Garrard Road major Novice teani was held last Saturday. at the Brooklin Arena. (The boys got to stay home wlth their mothers for Mother's Day.) The firet game for the host team, sponsored by the Optimniats of Whitby, was a 4-0 shut-out of Beaches. Rob Martin found the net twice while Matt Cook and Chris Thompson added singles. The second matchup was also against Beach- es who managed to score -three tumes but the Optimists swltched to a passing style of play for an 8-3 win. Thomp- son excelled with 3 goals, Matt Shearer and David Wood had 2 each and Cook was the other scorer. The fellows who made the big passes were Danny LaDouceur, Brandon Smith and 'Roadrunner' Directo. The third exhibition mini-series wiil be held next Saturday at Iroquois Park Arena. In other exhibition play, the WGR major peewee lacrosse team hosted Burlington for a two-hour game but had to go to Ajax Arena for the floor time. It was a close game with the score even throughout. The Whitby Hideaway team eventually won by 17 to 16. Derek Jones had 4 goals, 2 each by Andrew Vanderlinde, If you've always wan- ted to show off your drlvlng skills, and you're between the ages of 15 and 24, then the Young Drivers' Raily mnay be just the chance you've been waiting for. The raUly, to be held May 15 in Oshawa, has been held nationaily for four years, but Durham Region la getting the competition for the first tixne. Each car will contain both a driver and passenger. The winning team from the local raily will advance to the national competition against 18 other reglonal winners. Both members of the winning team from this conipetition wil win a new Ford Escort with the second place finish- ers winning two sets of Goodyear Arriva radial tires. Goodyear has also donated a $50 gift certificate for each regional winner.J The Oshawa raily is I I divided lnto two sections - on-road and off-road. The on-road section wii test the driver's defensive skills, and check, his -response, to various ,"surprises" ready to confront him.
