PAGE 8,WEDNESDAYJUNE 1, 1983, WHITBY FREE PRESS LCBO warehouse One of Canada's larg- est combination rack and structural steel supported buildings is on the rise in Whitby. Over 7,000 tons of struc- tural steel are being fa- bricated and erected in a Canron/Frankel joint venture, for the Liquor Control Board of Ont- ario's new Durham INBY10 OUTBY 4 Regional Warehouse. The structure is located on the property of the former Camp 'X', made famous in William Ste- venson's book "A Man Called Intrepid...". Some of the remains of the bunkers are still visible immediately south of the project site. The 110 foot high building, consisting of 13 pallet levels, wll neces- sitate an extremely de- manding steel fabrica- tion and erection effort. In order to comply with the exactin specifica- tions for the automated storage and retrieval system, Canron/Frank- el are required to meet exceptionally fine struc- tural tolerances. To further increase the challenge, the scale of this steelwork ap- proaches mammoth proportions. If all the columns and steel tubing being installed by Canron/Frankel were laid end-to-end, they would stretch over 534 km - the distance from Toronto to Mon- treall When erected, they will provide 600,000 pallet-sized storage spaces, all of which will be loaded and retrieved by computerized material handling sys- tems. Canron Inc. and Frankel Steel of Toronto are two of Canada's largest steel fabricators and erectors. Comple- tion date for the new building is expected to be early in 1984. By TIM BAINES Free Press Staff Casey's Restaurant has received approval from Town Council to go ahead with an anniver- sary celebration, sche- duled for June 30 to July 3. The restaurant, locat- ed at 1100 Dundas Street East, is celebrating its two years at the Whitby location with a variety of events, and will fea- ture a beer tent, pending approval by the Liquor Licensing Board of On- tario. Town Administrator Bill Wallace advised Council to accept the proposal with conditions that the tent, on prop- erty adjacent to Casey's, be subject to' the Ontario Building and Fire Code restric- tions and approval of the Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario. Ron Butler, manager of Casey's, responded to the concerns of an earlier options commit- tee meeting, by saying that the area would be fenced and supervised by Casey's staff, off duty police officers and Sumar security person- nel. Butler announced that the agenda would con- Minister of Revenue June 1r 1983 TO ALL REGION OF DURHAM CITIZENS As many of you will know, the head office of the Ontario Ministry of Revenue has recently relocated f rom Toronto to downtown Oshawa. Needless to say, a relocation of this magnitude and complexity, involving an organization of some 21 branches and nearly 1600 employees, is a difficult and challenging task, indeed. I am aware that the success of this relocation is due in no small part to the cooperation and warm hospitality extended to the Ministry and its staff by communities throughout the Region of Durham. Largely through your generosity and assistance, the relocation has been conducted with a minimum of disruption to staff and for this the Ministry of Revenue is most grateful. The March 29th "Gala Welcome Night" dinner hosted by the Region's chambers of commerce is still much talked about at head office, and will be remembered for many years to come as a most pleasant and lasting testimony to the goodwill extended the Ministry by the Region of Durham and its citiz-ens. Clearly the Region and the Ministry are developing a warm relationship and we can both look forward to many productive and mutually satisfying years. And on this score, the Ministry of Revenue extends an invitation to all citizens of Durham to drop in at the Ministry's Public Open House, June 6th to 9th, 6-9 p.m. each evening. Learn more about the Ministry, its programs, services and organization, and visit our new home at 33 King St. W. in Oshawa. Our doors will be open and we'll be pleased to return some of that old fashioned Durham hospitality that has been so vital-a part of our successful Region. Yours sincerely George Ashe Minister relocation to the sist of four days, Thurs- day, June 30 to Sunday, July 3, with limited hours of operation: Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday and Satur- day from noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday from noon to dusk. "Designated parking areas will be well publi- cized both prior to and during the event. Each area will be supervised with directional signs indicating available parking erected at ap- propriate areas. Appro- vals have been obtained to utilize the Anderson High School and Glen wood Ford parking lots," he said in a letter to Wallace. All events at this time are tentative but Butler did confirrh that a golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday, June 30 at Thunderbird Golf and Country Club with a pig roast at Casey's to follow for competitors. Butler an- nounced that proceeds from the tournament would be donated to the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Contin- uing Care Unit Fund. Friday will be the official celebration at Casey's birthday in con- junction with Canada Day. Tentative events include a lobster roast, games of chance, a live band and a fireworks. display, pending ap- proval, Events pencilled in for Saturday include an arts and crafts show, talent show, live band, and a possible car rally/ scavenger hunt. Sunday's events may include a treasure hunt, competitions for the young at heart, and a fun run from Casey's Oshawa to the Whitby branch. Although Butler has said that he would like the event to become an annual one, Council wants to reserve the right to address the issue each year. Butler is confident that the event will be successful and be ac- cepted warmly by the citizens of Whitby. "It is our aim with the support of the town and its service agencies to establish an event which will grow into a tradli- tion," he said in his let- ter to Council.
