This group of Cana- dian citizens, part of Governor General Ed Schreyer's study con- ference on our changing industrial Society, arrived in Wbitby in the midst of a tour tbrough Ontario which will shortly wind up in Ot- tawa with a mass con- ference. The group was offi- cially welcomed at Cullen Gai"d sb * Bl Wallace, town'a=- strator, Mayor Bob At- tersley and Len Cullen, owner of the renowned Gardens. They were joined by about 50 other local dignitaries, poiti- clans and businessmen. These included MWP Scott Fenneil and MUPP George Ashe. Cullen told the group amassed at the outdoor ampithetre that bis formula for success was coninuusefforts to appease the public, rather than, seeking profit. '$Our pocy i& to give the customer more than wbat 'tbey expeet to get," he sald. The sole purpose of this is not to mnake money. If we took this (a profit-orlented) attitude, we would lose integrity, 'customers and in the long-run, we would lose our profit."1 The group was treated to a tour through the gardens, miniatr vil- lage and fair. First-time visitors to Cullen Gardens -were' amazed at the detail and ingenuity of the minia- ture village and espe- cially the fair, featuring some of the rides and at- tractions made, famous at Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition., Everyone then board- ed buses for an exten- sive tour of the Whitby area. Tour guides Bob Short, director of plan- ning, Paul Rycroft, deputy director of plan- ning and Larry' Cava- nagb, manager of long range planning, 0ffered insightful commentar- ies on the various at- tractions and businesses in the area. Some of the sigbts pointed out te the touring group were the Brooklin Spring Fair, Family Kartways, tbe new L.C.B.O. Ware- bouse, Wbltby Yacht Club and the Iroquois Park Complex. Following the tour, the- group returned to Whitby's Municipal Building where a recep.- tion and dinner took place.
