Tbis unity is comg about because of the Neighbourhood Watch program, a program that was, only recently accepted by Council. Carol Tibbo, president of the programn, is thrilled with its auccesa. She says 251 out or 272 homeowners are taking part in the program. There are 20 houses Up for sale in the area she adds. This 90 per cent par- ticipation rate is hear- twarmig to Tibbo. whn began tbe project on a small scale after a rasb of break-ina. She found the response so positive on her own street, Calder Crescent, she expanded it to include the whole subdivision. "The response bas been overwhelming, it's great,"t she said. She began looking into tbe program aft.er wit- nessing a break-i six montba ago. After many meetigs with members of Coun- cil, the group was fially given approval to inatail Neigbbourbood Watch signa imid- June.. Tom Traicheff, of Calder Crescent, ia one resident who, swears by the program. His home was broken into during February and the incident left bis wife restiess and, unable to sleep at migbt. He was finally forced to instal bars on bis back win- dows. "If -neighbours co- operate witb wbat the Program meana, it'l work," he said. "lWe need 100 per cent co- operation for this to work." The succsa of the program speaks for it- self. Since Neigh- bourhood Watch began, there, have been no break-ins, while in an eight month stretch before, tbere were 13 break-ina reported. Neighbourhood Watch also assista Durham Regional .Police. Because neighbours'are watchig for eacb otber, any oddities, can be quickly reported to the local police detachment. Pringle Creek is also the first neighbourhood i Durham Region to adopt the idea but Tibbo is boping more will follow. "I bope this will set a precedent,"9 'abe said. "I've been talking te people from Bowman- ville and Oshawa- and we hope to sSe this set up i more neigh- bourboods in our town." She did indicate that Wbitby Town' Estates bas a program, with not as mucb organization, and Bluegrass Meadows bas sbown an itereat. Tbe signa are located at the intersections of Anderson and Bradley, Anderson and Mary and Ribblesdale and Pringle. Second beer store for Whitby Wbitby wil soon bave its second Brewer's Retail store. Town Council bas ap- proved the construction of a beer store i the K- Mart Plaza, on tbe south-west corner of Dundas Street East and Kendalwood Road. Couedulor Marcel Brunelle sald althoug be agreed Whitby needed a second Brewer's Retail, there were nearby residents concerned witb the building. He tried to refer the matter back to a committee, even tbough it was previously dealt with at a commit- tee of adjuStment. -The co"xnttee of adjustment is not Town Council,"P he said. "'The residents want sidewalka in. the area adjacent te tbe development, on tbe west aide of Ken- dalwood, from Dundas St. to Nicbol Ave. Councillor Joe Drumm revealed the developer waan't bound to put the sidewalks in because they wouldn't actually be on the site of the development*.
