Be tween You and Me Hy li tTl1 CO 1,Es THE SOUNDS 0F SUMMER Our very speclal place, the Town of Whltby la full of sound this summer, the sounds of progresa flot the usual sound of surnmer. Needless to say many residents are happy about the city versus town declalon. Enough people cared to make the exercise worthwhile. We were proud of our East Ward Coundillor, Joe Drumm. His words hit the nail on the head. I have respect for this man; his dedication and honesty are impressive. One more word on this tople and then we will hope it goes away for a long time. Doesn't a town sound much cooler than a city? Now for the sounds of the country, especially this summer. Ail our lives we have spent our suminers ini the country by a lake or a river so we feel we are famillar with some aspects of summer living far aayfrom largemretrcgpoitan centres. I have heard the odd person say they don't like the stilinesa of the countryside and flnd It difficuit to sleep; they say the quletness la 1"deafenlng."1 Until dawn 1 The birds corne alive and they f111 the air wlth sound, some raucus, some very melodlous and beautiful. They ail join i and one has the feeling they are slnging praises because they are alive and saying, "1thank you". In our case the sounds are so beautiful, water lap- pig on the shore, sometimes huge waves poundlng the sand while the trees blow i the wlnd. Leaves rustllng and the sound of theodd treen the woods rubbig agalnst another as a 11mb spreads out beyond lt's own space. We have Mournlng Doves, many of them and they are always I evidence and always very audible. Some folk think they are owls but there la qulte a difference I their cal]. Until recently we have had several familles of Great Horned Owls. They nest hlgh in the pines and to someoe on the ground they look huge as they sit in their rather large nests. Two months ago one flew into an electrie wlre and was electrocuted; not one to ha seen sice. The guil population is explodlng at a great rate everywhere. By the lake the numbers have in- creased and often at night we hear them crying out as they fly over the water. Sometimes at dusk there are hundreds of them swooping through the air cat- ching bugs. We don't need them for this purpose as we have swallows who excel at this. Gulis are taking over the cities icluding Toronto. If they are not flying in the air they are on the ground eatlng leftovers from the fast food places. They fly of course to grain fields in the daytime but not often ail over town. WH ITBY FR EE PRESS, WEDNESDAY JULY 27, 1983, PAGE 5 Should a plan ha devlsed to collect and destroy their eggs? If we allow this to go on it may ha too late. I wisb the powers who ha would give it some thought. We wonder how many people are wlthln earshot of the siren at the steel plant? Last year after suf- ferlng from this noise which when the wind la in a westerly direction is reaily rather terrible. I phoned somneone at the Town Hall and i no time ail was weil. This year I was told the man had retlred. Also I was told If you are i an industrial area the noise cannot ha avoided. Well we are not in an induatrial ares nor are any of 'the other who lose sleep over this. I thinkwhen the kins are opened this noiseis usecj as a safety and warnlng device. Mayha they could use brillant ights lnstead. It's a twenty four hour operation whlch means many people are awakened and find it difficult to go back to sleep. The sounds of progress are close by and again if the wind isin the right direction itseems to be almot i your own back garden. Time wlll h the only cure for this and so far the ýwork seems to ha gomng well and qulckly. It' difficuit to' blot out ail this racket and' the "beep, beep" is the worst. At news lime on TV there are commercials which depiet a workman on the site about to slip under the wheels of a massive machine only to ha saved by the "lbeep, beep."1 When one is asleep at 6: 30 i the mornlng and one's subconcious hesrs this, it la rather alarming. On and on it goes until the noon break cornes and then 5:30 when silence sets in. See page 1 W.G.A.A.
