Between You and Me 1h ltt'ril (OLES On this morning of JuIy 29, 1983 at 6 a.m. our' whole world was coloured orange, a rather duli lacklustre orange. The sky, the lake and ail else was enveloped in moisture, s0 tbick the sun's rays couldn't penetrate the atmosphere in the usual way to give us a brillant sunrise. Within an hour the skies were a'duil gray with the promise of rain. It's interesting but sad to drive around the coun- tryside to see the resuit of the drought. As you go north there seems to be a bit more green grass but not much. We try not to travel in July and August, too much heat and too many people. Shopping and sightseeing leave much to be desired, we think, during a bot speil. On our way to Elora this time we drove up through the Halton Hills and stopped over at Acton to have lunch at the Olde Hide' House, just a stone's throw from Highway 7 in the centre of town. The Town of Acton's leather heritage dates back to 1865 when the Beardmore Tannery opened for business and became the largest tannery in the British Empire by the turn of the century. Built in 1899, with haif a million bricks and massive wood beams, 30,000 square feet in ail, the building served as a warehouse for bides. In 1981 Jack Tanners Table opened a full service restaurant dedicated to providing good value and customer satisfaction. Apart from this there is a major Artisan and Craft Mail. Many square feet of shopping, clothes, leather goods, furs, woolens and shoes. The restaurant is a delight, loVely atmosphère, good service and appetizing food and drink. Very high ceilings with many skylights and from' the beame lovely hanging plants in groupa of say six to ten. Many "Tiffany" lights banging too from the beams beside the plants. Very appealing and tastefuily done. Gleaming wood furniture with an area of soft, comfortable armchairs and coffe tables where you can enjoy a drink and or have your meal. We thorougbly enjoyed it ail including a very tasty lunch. This seems to be the way everyone feels and of course this is the way to go; build a gobd reputation and people'wil flock to your establish- ment. From there up to Elora for a couple of days to spend sometime with our friend in ber one hundre fFOR PROTECTION &APPEARANCE INii 12 ATTRACTIVE, < COLOURS Ventila ted Aium -À"A~ Manufacturedb ALUMINUM LiMfED I11 Free -EstimateseOuick Delivery & Installation 728-1633 FACTORY & SHOWROOM. 845 FAREWELL ST. OSHAWA OPEN SAMSFM MONFRI1 and flfty-year-old bouse. Just a dream of a place, renovated but no structural changes and done on a low budget whlch 1 feld was very important. Even the Gorge looked thlrsty and rather depleted. The water stilI runs over the fails which entices many onlookers. There seemed to be fewer tourists this time around due they say to the ex- treme heat but as usual the parking spaces were few and far between. The countryside looks thirsty, even the trees, wane and weary as some of them actuaily droop. The weeds are thriving everywhere especiaily Queen Annes Lace very much in evidence alongaide' the roads. Shopping can be fun in Elora and we often come away with somethlng. This time a pink Xmas tree of ail things in JMyl1 We always go into a shop owned by a doctor's wife who at this time was setting up ber Xmas room The Xmas tree about four feet tal was too, mucb for me, a temptation I couldn't resist especiaily because it was half price for some strange reason. If it had flot been reducted I would have just enjoyed looking at it and thinking how lovely it was. Now-from the sublime to the ridiculous! I have just read that flues multiply three times faster in dry, bot weather. There seem to be many baby ones arounid especiaily on the beaches. The worst tbing of ail is what I caîl the deer or horse fly probably a misnomer. They are absolutely terrible and their sting is frightful. They too frequent the beaches and seem to like the sand. Smailisb, similiar to the housefly, but with a patch of colour on their back. They fly slowly and move the same way generaily biting the feet or ankles. Very soon after they bite the pain and sweilin begins, then the itcbing and a drawn feeling due to the expansion of the skin. I'm sure many people bave remedies but the best we have found is vitamin E. It works almost instantly. The pain disapears and the sweiling goes down; this applies to bee and wasps stings too. It pays off to carry the vitamin E when you are bathing, sunning or picnic -ing. WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3, 1983, PAGE 5 YMCA pre-sehool class> The co-ordinator of the successful Parents and Pre-Schoolers Cen- tre had to undergo surgery in the spring, which forced the Oshawa YWCA to can- cel the program. Many parents were upset and disappointed, as this centre bas been an important part of their lives. A few mothers attempted to offer the program in their homes, but because of the numbers involved and space required, it was not feasible. More urgent'requests were directed to the program director and finaily a Board Member was recruited to act as SUPervisor. The other mothers helped to re- open and supervise the centre for the spring session. The Parents and Pre- Schoolers Centre is a unique program in Oshawa which began in 1978, co-sponsored by the Parenting Association and the I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I YWCA. It has been located in the comn- munlty halls, schools, churches and in the YWCA building. Although there were many separate services for aduits and children, this centre offered a place for parents to be with their children in a supportive and Iearning environient. It is a drop-in centre wlth the goal of providing paren- ts and pre-scboolers wlth support, education and opportunlty for sociaizing. Parents, who were formerly isolated came together to share and to learn. The low fees enable families on limited in- comes, especiaily single parents, to participate. The YWCA, througb its United Way funding subsidizes this centre eacb session, in order to provide a quality program. ?FORMS REGISTER, CONTINUOUS, CARBONIZED & MUSC.
