G eorge Ashe, NI PP Miiter of Governmet Services THE NEW YOUNG ONTARIO CAREER PROGRAM Now in its seventh year, thiehighly successful On- tario Youth Employment Program bas created jobs for, thousanda of Young people across the province. This year OYEP i. funding over 25,00S employer. and creatlng summer jobs for more than 50,000 young adults. To complement OYEP, $25 million was allocated in the May 20 Provincial Budget to go toward an ac- celerated Youth Employment Program whlch would extend beyond the summer monthi. Known as the Young Ontario Career Program, and like OYEP administered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, this program will, during the next year, create 12,500 jobs for both post-secondary school graduates and non- graduates, aged 20 to 29 years, to help launch them into their chosen careers. Co-ordinated by the Board of Industrial Leader- ship and Development (BILD), these initiatives will assist businesses, non-profit organizations and cer- tain public employers such as hospitals to create addltional jobs and career opportunities for young people who are presently unemployed or under-em- ployed. As valuable work expérience and skills are gained, contacts will also be made to increase the -possibility of getting permanent employment in their chosen fields. The Honourable Claude Bennett, Minister Of Municipal Affairs and Housing, notes that "'business wiIl benefit from the opportunlty to assess possible long-term employees while receiving a subsidy to reduce their costs during this perlod of economic recovery". Certain guldelines bear repeating: a> Eligible jobs wilI be those wbich would not have exlsted without program fundlng; they must provide substantial work expérience and contribute to the employee's vocational development. -b) Eacb jobemuat be for at least 25 hours per week for at least 20 consecutive weeks. c). Where possible, the job should have at least the potential of being made permanent when the subsldy ends. d) Eligible employees must have reached'the age of 20 and not yet reached the age of 30 by July 1, 1ou. e) Employees may be poSt-secondary graduates or noe-graduates. Graduates mut have' completed the requirements for graduation for at leastý a one-year program from a recognized post- secondary educational institution between January 1961 and December 190 and mut not hold a per- manent job related to their qualifications. Non- graduates mut have been unemployed for at least 3 montha.
