Tenanucy office inOshawa Ontario Consumer and Commercial Relations Minister Robert Elgie and Durham East M.P.P. Sam Cureatz announced lust week that the Residential Tenancy Commission lias opened an office in Oshawa on August 2. The office, with an initial staff of three, will handle, rent review ap- plications' under the Residential Tenancies Act from landiords and tenants i the Region of Durham, and also provide information on the Landlord and Tenant Act.' For the past few years, landiord and tenant inquiries and rept review cases orinating in Durham Region have been han- dled by the Com- mlàsion's Peterborough office, Dr. Elgie said. Now, however, the volume of - activity originating in Durham justifies a separate of- fice. "Over the past year or so, more than 50 percent of the Peterboroughi of- fice's. rent review caseload lias involved rentai properties in the Oshawa area, and more than two-thi.rds of the monthly inquiries, the office receives are from Durham," lie said. "This -proved -that another office was warranted." Under the Residential Tenancies Act, rent in- creases are limited to a maximum of si* per cent,. unles a alandior d applies to and receives approval from the Residential Tenancy Commission for. a higlier increase. The law permuta a tenant to challenge a proposed increase of any amount, including increases within six per cent. The Commission also operates in advisory service under which it provides information on another provincial law, the Landiord and Tenant Act, which governa such thinga as security deposits, evic-, tion of tenants, and maintenance and repair obligations of tenants, and landlords. Even thougli the new Commission office is situated in Oshawa, Dr. Elgie pointed -out that when a -hearing lai necessary for a rent review application, whenever possible the Commission will hold the hearing in the local community wliere the rentai property in question la located. This was the: practice even when the cases - were handled by the Peter- boroughi office. The. new Oshawa of- fice is located, on the fif- th, floor of the Bank of Nova Scotia Building at 11 Simcoe Street North, corner of King Street, phone 723-8135. For people' who live outside the Oshawa tol-' free telephope area, the office may be called without charge by asking the Operator for Zenith 9-600.
