During the entire two weeks,- the weather was sunny and hot,. Each day began and ended with blue cloudlessà skies. Eighty-four town residenta died within three weeks. The town fathers,, in their desperation, made a solemn vow that if God would stop the plague, they would present a play depicting the life and sufferings of Christ every ten years for the duration of 'their existence. The story goes, that from that moment on, no further deaths occurred. In 1634 the citizens presented the first, Passion-Play. With few exceptions this play has been staged every 10 years for the pat three centuries. The buildings with their hand painted frescoes present a certain old world charm which lsaa delight to the, visitors from all over the world who corne to view this drame. The play is held in a covered auditorium with an open-air stage; a backdrop of green- fielda,-and blue skies. The performance begins at 8:30 a.m. with a two- hour break for lunch and ends at 5p.m. Ail of the over 700 ac- tors and actresses- nust be born in the village.
