WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 1983, PAGE i 0 SPORTS WEEK Umpire 's decision cost-s BY TIM-BAINES The whitby Legionaires have had it Up to, their ears with umpires. For the second time in a week, a contraversial cail could have cost the Legio naires a game. , The latest incident was Tbursday nhght in Brooklin as Whitby squared off with th eir arch rival Legion team. The Brooklin squad emerged with a 7-6 decision in ten inmings. Wbitby coach Larry Batherson questions a cail that was made in the eighthý innmng. A runner was cailed out at first base when "everybody in the park knew he was safe." What made the cal seem even more in doubt was the fact'that a Whitby runner' had scored ail the way from second base, before the shortstop's throw reached first base. With the run crossing the plate, the Whitby team would have taken the 7-6 victory in regulation play. Last weekL_ an umpire ruled that Whitby pit- cher Daryly Blake had thrown an illegal pitch because the catcher was flot ini the catcber's -box when the bail was tbrown. This allowed the runner on third to trot home with the win- ming run. 'IThose two umpires could have cost us first place," said Batherson. It's annoying this would happen. these are very crucial games."> Whitby belted out 10- bits against Brooklin. Dan Denyer had a double and two singles, Peter Davidson had a single and double and Daryl Blake, had a double. Bob Muir, Mike Gorman, Wayne Owen and -Mark Renki ewicz eacb hit a single. Renkiewicz singled. Denyer doubled and was followed by an RBI single by Muir. Gor- man's single drove in a run as did Blake on a fielder's choice. Owen's sacrifice scored the fourth run. Brooklin fought back with a run in the third and tied the game in the fourth as tbree runners reached base on errors. Whitby scored a run in the fifth as Denyer singled and came around on a idouble by Blake.' Brooklin took the lead in the seventb as Fry singled and scored on a double by Sorechetti, who in turn'scored on a sacrifice fly by Down. Owen walked in the eigbth and scored on a double by Davidson. Brooklin scored the winning run as Sorechetti doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Down. On Tuesday, the Legionaires hooked up with Port Perry and came away with a 1-0 victory in a pitcber's duel. Port Perry chucker Mark Coreski allowed only one bit, but that proved to be costly as Wayne Owen tripled and scored on a fielder's choice in tbe eighth to provide the. winning margin. Wbitby hurler Mike Gorman was no sloucb as he permitted only four bits on bis way to tbe shutout. Port Perry mounted a Whitby tbreat ln the sixtb inning as Desabtell singled, stole second and went to third on a passed, bail but tried to score on a fly bail to centre fielder Wayne Owen, wbose tbrow to home cut down the runner and OSHAWA WHITBY NEWCASTLE'y Unitede WaLI Minor Atom reps win The Wbitby minor Atom soccer rep team closed their season on a winmng note witb a 6-3 victory over Oshawa Turul.
