The prograni, offered free of charge, has become lncreasingly popular over.. the years with more immigrants re-locating in this area. It is offered Tuesday and Thursday after- noons, from 1: 30 to 3:30, throughout the school year at St. Marks United Church, 201 Cen- tre St. S., in Whitby. According to a spokesperson for the program committee, Marguerite Sandig, it can be difficuit for the class members who. speak very littie English but they are often quickly able to adapt because of the course practicality. "It's very frustrating emotionally and men- tally to listen to a language for one or two hours when you really don't understand it," she said. "We start with the practical aspects. The idea is to learn to communicate and be able to adapt to Canadian society. " Some cultures think in pictures so they have to begin to think in letters and words." Classes are offered at beginner, intermediate and advanced'levels .80, there te no restriction on who can-take the course. Sandig, says in some cases people have been te Canada* for 10 te 15 years and still do not have a firm grasp on the language concepts. "Italians for example may tend to stay home and within their comù- munity. They may have some knowledge of the language so our course is split into levels, based on need, " she said. A specially designed program is available for pre-school children where they learn Engllsh through playtime activities while their parents 'at- tend the regular classes. More volunteers are needed te teach in both thé, adult and the pre- school prograni. No prior training ,_ or teaching experience is- required. Individuals wishing to volunteer should cail Monica Mc- Clure at 666-3137. Anyone wishing to take the English class should either caîl the Durham Board of Education at 571-1356 or show up at one of the classes. lm Run for Caner The Whitby Terry Fox Run for Cancer raised over $3,Ooo des pite the> gloomy weather.'the rainy weather did not dampen thespirits of Alasdair Syme, 8, 0f Whitby, Who is presented with a certificate by run organizer Bil Peel.
