That's probably the best summnation of the season-open er for the junior Henry. Street, Hawks football squad as they hung on to defeat Oshawa's O'Neil Collegiate 27-26. The Hawks roared out of the, starting blocks early as noseguard. Greg Lepine scooped up a fumble and rambled down. ilanker Chris Reier s àre touchdown on a 60-yard pass and run play and halfback Jeff Page bulled over the goal-uine for other first- haif majors. Kieker Scott Tutten added three converts. The score stood at 20-6 at haif-time with the Hawks apparently in command. A succession of errors <put, O'Neiil in a position to tie the game as they narrowed the gap to one point. Rather than going for the tie, they decided to gamble and try for a two point convert. The attempt failed and even though O'Neill regained possession -of the bal with 'about 30' seconds remaining in the game, they could flot get the bail downfîeld. Henry Street co-coach Dan McCluskey at- tributed the early lead to% nervousness on the part of. O'Neill's players. "They were on a strange field and they were nervous. We got the jump on them but as the game wore on, they began to play more con- fidently as they realized theéy were as good as us," he said. He was not at al pleased with the num- ber of turnovers his team committed. ."IWe fumbled three ti'mes and had two punts blocked. We made tons of mistakes but having made those mistakes and stili winning should give us confidence." He noted that Chris Reier, who played botb flanker and inside linebacker, especialiy stood out on offence. The defensive star of the game was Bart Slichter, Henry's safety. "Bart was saving us ail game. He's just a small' guy but he devastated a few guys wîth hits," said Mac- Cluskey. It is probably too early for MacCluskey or the other co-coach, Steve, Greening, to assess the team's chan- ces in the nine-team Lake Ontario Secondary School >Association (LOSSA) junior football Ioop. Tradition would die- taLe that Henry wiil be in contention at the top of the league as they are defending champions and have won the titie two of the past four years. "At this point we're inexperienced and we haven't really seen the kids in pressure situations," said Mac- Cluskey. He also abides by a philosophy used by Bobby Cox, coach of the Toronto Blue Jays basebail club. "If a kid has a rough outing, you have- to remember it's his first game. The kid is probably basicaily a good athiete so you hope he just needs a littie confidence." >"I looked out there today and saw kids with no color in their faces. We have to build up their confidence. for them to perform up to potential." There are currently 27 fuil-time members of the junior squad and'a few Grade 9 students, who attend practices and try, to get some ex-, perience.
