I arn bombarded from ail media with the same advice frorn Participaction ... "get going and stay going"l. The Church might well pick Up the theme - in- volvement, participaction - how important it is and how often it is lacking from those who rnake Sunday pilgrimage to the Church of their choice. We are told that the Church (the Anglican -Church New Christian book store Two local women are hoping to promote Christianity through a new store on Byron St. S. Sharon Sibeon, the store owner, andi Wendy Tonna, store manager, are both born-again Christians and hope to spread the word of the Lord through books and Pamphlets and in the future through records and video movies. The store, Crusaders for Christ (CFC) Bookstôre and Variety, is the first business yen- ture for the women, Who are sisters. "It's totally the Lord 's store. It belongs to Him, " said Tonna. "Sure we want to take in enough money to keep the store going but our purpose is to help Christians in their Christian walking," said Sibeon. t'The response. to our store has been very good 50 far but the biggest thing now is to let people know we're here, " she added. Both women are mernbers of the Durham Full Gospel Church, also on Byron St. The store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. at least, and perhaps others) is no different from most worldly organizations in that it adheres to the 20 to 80 principle. This principle states that 20 per cent of the participants are responsible for 80 per cent activlty. Twenty per cent of the people give 80 per cent of the mnoney. Eighty per cent of the prayers are offered by 20 per cent of the people, and so on. In a secular organization, this might not be, a problem as long as the work gets done. However, the situation is radically different in the Church, for its members; are called, not to fringe mernbership, or even partial participation, but total commitrnent. Not, perhaps, total commitment to any particular Church:.denomination or congregation, but total comrnitment, certainly, to Jesus Christ. When we hear sorneone seek to lirnit a discusstion by saying "Let's keep religion out of it" we know that for a Christian to do so would be an exercise in futility. He is not free to keep bis faith " out ", except at his own peril. The people who lived in the days of the prophet Amos went to the extreme of keeping God even out of their religious observances. Amos had harsh words for those who complained, "When will the new mnoon be over, that we may selI grain? And the sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale?" (Amos 8: 5(a)). This has a rather familiar ring as we currently hear the caîl for wide open Sundays. The Christian churches can be expected to line up against any such move. But if they do there are some important questions for Christians to ask themnselves. 1. Are we prepared to do more than just talk? Some things which 1 have to, consider are: stocking up on Saturdays s0 I don't need to use a "convenjence store" on Sunday; doing without sornething I rnight like to, have but forgot. to get on Satuùrday; avoiding restaurant meals on Sunday; avoiding professional sports on Sunday. 2. Does the rest of our week refleet the commit- ment of Sunday? Or, recailing the 20 to 80 principle, do I practice 80 per cent of my faith just 20 per cent of the tirne? The Christian is called to a life of service, obedience, love and worship everyday not just one day a week. PAGE il Wvellness Workshops for Women offered a gain In response to the overwhelming success of the Wellness Workshops for Women Program sponsored last Spring by the Durhamn Region District Health Council and the Durham Regional Health Unit, the program is being of- fereti again this Faîl. The participants in the Spring prograrn strongly concluded that the, program be run again and left the final session wishing there was more to, corne. As a resuit, a set of six seminars designed to provide women with in- formation on various aspects of helth will begin the evening of Oc- tober 17 andwill run one* evening per week for six consecutive weeks to, November 21. Dr Pauline Abraharns, a Toronto physician, will be coor- dinating the program and along with a group of local health professionaîs, wiil be of- fering information on gynecological prob- lems, menopause and aging, nutrition and fit- ness, stress management, asser- tiveness, family health In addition, for those who want to take the fir- st step to better health, a quit smoking course will be offered through, a short class held before each seminar. The Spring prograrn boasts sorne happily reformed smokers thanks to the Director of the Durham Regional Lung Association. The Wellness for Women prograrn is based on the prernise that there is mo re to health than the absence of illness.
