Hloward Smith, chairman of the festival committee, asked members of the operations committee to approve a 1ban or grant to alleviate the losses. The prospect of a loan was immediately dismissed because it is flot perrnitted under the Municipal Act. Smith told the operations committee about $2,000 was stili owed to bands who ap- peared in the festival parade. He' said the bands were getting a lit- tde "edgy" about flot being paid and this could hinder the up- coming Jaycees Santa Claus parade. Smith did manage to corne up with the $2,000 the following night through beer refunds, the sale of some Marigold passport coins and a personal boan which he was forced to take out. Smith said the feed- back from the com- munity about the festival was positive and constuctive and rnany changes are plan- ned for next year to help boost sagging attendan- ce figures. While the committee was expecting more than 1,000 people at the International Night, only about 500 showed up and a disappointing 93 people showed up at the Casino Night, with 1,000 expected. The overaîl attendan- ce was, between 2,100 and 2,200, flot counting approximately 600 people who took in the fireworks display. "Unfortunately al- though our expenses were in line, our income was flot, " said Smith. He admitted there was also disenchan- tment with the passport (see page 3 Zl e IX
