"Fast*Eddie is back in town," chuckled Robinson and Justin Cardwell scored for Whitby. Mississauga Jets had been winning by large scores, so our boys were ready for a 3- 2 win, with goals by Cook, Rob Martin and Scott Mitchell. Whitby then needed a big win to earn their way into the semi-finals. Goalten- ders Dan Ladouceur and Mike Koutris helped by shutting out the Buf- falo Bisons 6-0 with goals by Cook, David Wood and pairs by Robinson and Cardwell. Coach Steve Cardwell and manager Bob Cook were pleased with the team. The semi-finals mat- ched Wh itby against the Toronto Marlies. Somne of the pessimists in the stands wondered before the game if the scoreboard could count Champ Weremich, after retur- ning from a whirlwind, five weeks of curling in which his rink qualified in every bonspiel it en- tered and came away with $75,000 in earmings. Werenich established his formidable creden- tials Iast April when the RAM 1006H DODGE MM 1 '3 KEEP YOUR EYES ON 'w 3 digit scores. But after the first period, Whitby had held one of the best Triple 'A' teams in the province with 6-0, to 1-0 for the second period and even scored during the third period, when Robinson was setup in front of the Marlies net. This learning experien- ce ended 11-1. In the Consolation Finals, to decide thirdý and fourth, the Chicago Hawks shutout a tired Whitby team 3-0. Our boys may have corne home defeated on the scoreboardin their last 2 games but their spirits have not been beaten. They got farther than they expected -and are determined to- become stronger for the ,next time. They are proud of the. trophy they brought home. er-old firefighter won the world title at the Regina Silver Broom and is nowin the process of proving; that' this accomplishmen t was no fluke. 0f course, Werenich is the decided favourite when his rink stepa onito the Whitby Curling Club ice for his first draw in the $19,000 Sun Life spiel set for the first weekend in December (2-4). Sur- prisingly. his rink has neyer won the title in this 32-team event. "The tour we've had, has definitely been fun and the Sun Life will be a homecoming of sorts for us," Werenich said. "We've only played 2 games in southern On- tario so far this season. " Werenich, has been under the gun this year and performed ad- mirably. He qualified in Winnipeg, lost in the semi-finals to Win- nipeg's Kerry Burtnyk at Switzerland, reached the finals, in the Vernon, B.C., Cash Spiel, was runner-up to local superstar AI Hackner in the Sun Life Grand Prix at Thunder Ray', then See Champ pg. 19 BUY LEASE R ENT e. 396 Atom Team Fares Weli Homecoming For World DCTOR 'H'l JOSEPH A.
