g WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESOAY DECEMBER 28. 1983, PAGE 5 '83 IN IREVIE mi *TORONTO - Plans ftà the GO East expansion are underway with the appointmuent of seven consulting firms te deai with aligrnments, muni- cipal liaison and the pre- design of seveq. seg- ments of GO TrTnsit's Inter-regional transit progrm. "We've already esta- blished a joint MTC-GO team," naid Communi- cations Minister James Snow, "for the overail development of the pro- vinci aily fünded project and to ensure regional and local participation. 'Ille consultants will work under the MTC-GO umbreila with, as V!ve stated from the outset, priority being 'given to the extensionof GO ser- vice east fromn Picker- ing te Oshawa and west from Oakville to Hamnil- ten."2 " Unveiled in ODctober, in response te, increased demands for rapid tran-. sit, the project wil shape the future of GO Transit. It wiil develop The purchasing of three Whitby homes is the next barrier the region must: overcomne in securing the GO ALUT rail transit route from Pickering to Oshawa. The ministry of tran- sportadton and com- munications has asked' Durhaml region te pur- chase the remaining homes by April 1, 1984. The region currently owns five homes on the west side of Brock St. Regional councii will look into this issue at this - Wednesday's meeting. In the meantimne, the rickety Brock St. bridge is just a few steps away from being reconstruc- ted te a four Jane over- pass te Highway 401, providing ail goes weil. This reconstruction was initiaily held back, when the GO. ALRT project came along. The region had been waiting for federal funding. [rC lays groundwork for GO East expansion transit lines with the __ __ __à _ IAew LauvG5ReU LIgntI Rail Transit (ALRT) to augment existing con- ventional services. In addition to the east- ern and western links, the strategy cails for development of a major1 east-west link conneet- ing north Metro Toronto with the rglons of Dur- ham, York, Peel, Halton and Hamilton-Went- worth. And this will provide the regions a basis from wbich to ex- pand and develop their transit systems. The feasabiity of an exclusive right-of-way adjacent te the present Lakeshore GO line will also be studied. And short-tenu plans to im- prove the exlsting ser- vice will be developed. The' consultants in-d clude: Totten Sims Hubicki Associates Ltd. for the Pickering- Whitby part of the east- ern ALRT extension, and M.M. Dillon Ltd. for Whitby-Oshawa. <A report from the minîstry of transpor- tation states that they wiil reimburse Durham for the funds needed'to purchase the remaining homes. As the Region has -already taken the q, initiai steps of pur- chasing the first five homes wh en they became available, they wil continue to, pur- chase the remainder of the homes. . The region is also preparedte expropriate if problems arise with home owners, but they are hoping that they wilI be able to strike a deal. Chairman of the region's works commit- tee, Whitby Councillor Gerry Emm, feels this would be a positive move. "We want the GO ALRT System. to be ex- tended eéast of- Metro', and we shouldhelpanîy,ý way .we can.", Work on the GO ALRT system is hoped to begin in early 1984.
