Myrtle, last Thrday evenmng. The fire, which is belleved to have started in the ceiing near 'the compressor area, con- sumed the Kurz Foods Imc. building valued at $60,000. Steaky, sausages, and other deli-style meat valued at $25,000 and plant machinery valued at $5S,000 were also Icet. Chris, 19, son of the owner and an employee at the plant, smelled smoke about 5 p.m. just as workers were leaving for the day. He and several others grabbed fire- extinguishers and sprayed the ceiling to suppress the smoke. .While no flames were seen at this t ime and the situation was thought to have been under con- trol, a fire soon ignited the south side n structure andr Mdr. Kurz notified the Whitby Fire Depament. About 25 firemen from Whitby, Brooklin, and Myrtie fought the blaze from about 5:30 p.m. un- til .2 a.m. the following morning preventing it from spreading to the nearby Kurz residence and a smaller processing plant ad- jacent to the burning building.- Firemen had to battle both the flames and the sub-zero -temperatures as they worked throughout the night. A tanker from Port Perry joined the three Whltby tankers in trucking water from Brooklin hydrants to the pum- pers.
