CONT'D FROM WG. 6 smnce it is listed in government records of 1825 as being still unresol ved. 1One source which was researched was the Pediar Papers on the early history of Oshawa. This source quite em- phaticaily refers to Lynde as the first resident 0f -central Oshawa (although only for about a year) as weli as of Whitby. Pedlar says that he "made a smail clearing on the bank of Oshawa creek.. and erected a small log house." People 200 years ago were even poorer speilers than they are today. One .0f the headaches 'of this research was the numerous misspellings of names and places. In the early stages of the work, Lloyd was con- sidered to be a misspelling of Lloyd's Creek; however, later it was found that there was in fact a David Lloyd who owned a property near the mouth history of what we now know as Lynde Creek. Although Jabez Lynde renewed his tavern licence every year from 1811-16, his, name is spelt right only twice. The, licences were officially issued to Jabez Lynde, Jabes. Lyndi, Jacob Lynde, Jabez Lynd, Jabex Lynde and Jabes Lynde. However, the most deviant speliing by far was in a land adver- tisement in the York Gazette in 1807 which refers to, "Jabez Hinds, 29 mile tree, Whitby". The context makes it certain that it is referring to Lynde. There are stil numerous avenues to pursue in this research and more specific in- formation about the bouse may still corne to light. Wick will be presen- ting a report of his research to the annual meeting Of the Historical Society on Feb. 28 in the auditorium of Fairview Lodge. By M.BEATH B.H.S. Director The Brooklin Hor- ticultural Society held its first meeting for 1984, on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Our new president, Ken Brown opened the event and welcomed members and guests. He urged those in atten- dance to take advantage of our rather extensive library, to apprise *TA] themselves of the gar- dening tips contained therein and get ready for spring planting. Ken then proceeded to dispel those after- holiday blues by re- introducing "Fun With Flora", a horticûltural quiz designed to test our knowledge. He followed this up by showing several slides of various flower shows held at the C.N.E. and a film ---Iu Yo' xcRi illustrating the beauty of the public gardens of Vienna. These lush and extensive gardens am- ply illustrate the results wbich. can be obtained by many hours spent in planning and main- tenance of them. Our next mneeting will be held on Feb. 22.
