Talks off Negotiations between the Durham Board of Education and its elementary echool teachers have broken off i a dispute over class size and the pupil- teach er ratio. Accordig to the Durham Elementary Teachers' Association, no negotiations have taken place since Jan.. 27. In a written statement D....claimed that "6after many attempts at broaching these issues, it became adamantly apparent that the Durham Board of Education was un- willing to make im- provements in the pupil- teacher ratio for 1983- 84." D.E.T.A. said'that -the current P.T.R. s 22 to 1. This ailows for classes to have as many as 35 pupils igrades 7 and 8 and 28 pupils in kin- dergarten. The association also says that reducig the P.T.R. 18 its priority in this round of talks. The teachers dlaim that the Durham Board has the second highest P.T.R. i the province and bas 577 classes above the recommen- ded maximums. Their P.T.R. is also substantîaily higher than those enjoyed by the secondary school teachers. "Secondary teachers bave a P.T.R. of 16.92 to 1 this year and 16.9 to 1 for next year,"t D.E.T.A. cdaims. Class size is also in- creased by the board's practise of' main- streamig special education students into regular classroom set- tig where possible which the teachers say means more work for them. While the board chairman, Trustee Ruth Lafarga (Oshawa), declied to make specific commnent.on the teachers' dlaim at press time she did note-that no further talks have been scheduled to date. The Church Speaks Sponsored by the WIIITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION Valentine's Day By THE REV. SYLVIA DUNSTAN Duty Chapain Whltby Jali Valentine's Day is our celebration of romantie love. With cards and gifts we ask "Be My Valen- tine". Anybody who loves somebody uses this time to rejoice. Heats and flowers speak of our longing for anideal love. But the origin of this holiday is less romantie and ideal than we would like. In the time of the Roman Empire there was a young man named Valentine. His name means "brave" and he was brave - brave enough to fali love wîth God. Valentine became a Christian when it was Wlegal and dangerous to be a foilower of Jesus. The community of Christians taught Valentie the commandments of Jesus: to love God and to love others. You cannot hide love for long, and eventuaily Valentie's love for God and for those around hlm was noticed, Arrested and taken to court Valentie would not rejeet the love of God and o, i love and bravery, Valentie was put to death by a squad of archers whose arrows pierced bis heart. Afterward, the Church set aside a day to remem- ber this young saint who loved God. The Sait Valentine's Day celebration gives us a chance to tbink about the way we love. Who do we love? How do we love? Are we brave i our love? Jesus said that if we only love those who love us we are not fulfilling God's commands.
