WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCI- 14, 1984, PAGE il The Chureh Speaks w mp Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION Knot Holes By THE REV. KEITH A. ELFORD Pastor Whitby Free Methodist Church Rave you ever watched a grandstand performan- ce through a knot hole? It's a most frustra ting ex- perience!1 You hear the shouts of the crowid or their peals of laugbter or their absolute silence and because you can't see the whole field through the. knot hole, most of the time you are clueless as to what is actually going ,on. I'm glad that when we were given the Scriptures, we weren't restricted to a "knot hole" view. Imagine, for example how pathetic Chris t's story would be if our understanding began and ended with the. crucifixion. No Old Testament prophecies revealing this as God's plan. No New Testament record showing -its unfolding in Jesus' life.' No resurrection victory! No post-resurrection ex- planations. Only a tragic crucifixion of a man who apparently thought that he had a divine appoin- tment to be a Jewish King. It makes. for a good movie, but it's not the whole story., During Lent, the season of personal an d corporate preparation for the celebration of Christ's ressurec- tion, why don't you, spend some time in the Scrip- tures fanning out your understanding of the Easter event. Read some Old Testament prophecies like Isaiah 52-13 -53:12 and understand that Jesus was not an unfortunate victim of circumstances. He was the eternal Son of God who volunteered to give up His position as God and come right into the middle ofou sin ravaged world to do whatever was necessary to save those who would turn to Him. Turn over to Philippians 2:1-16 to be challenged by St. Paul's reflections on the ministry of Christ heee-iýn earth. Ruminate on that great resurrection chqptier - I Corinthians 15. 0f course, the gospel naffratives of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.yield close up perspectives that shouldn't be ignored. At any rate, don't come through Lent to the Eastgr weekend with a "knot hole sentimentality" fixeýlon the pathos of Good Friday. On the other hand, do not get so fixated on "resurrection"ý, that thý is no cross in your Christianity. Rather, see' the whoie panorama of God at work and let Easter takê*ýon a greater breadth and a depth for you this year., Lacrosse sign-up, begins March 24 By TOM FRANK W.G.R.M.L.A. In that study lacrosse is ranked a low 5lst out of the 56 in the incidence of injury. (The three sports repor- ted to have the most in- juries were cycling, running and basebaîl.)
