WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14,1984, PAGE 3 'U run on my record," he saya....1 Fenneli aicclaimed Tor candi*date Scott Fenneli Scott Fenneli wilI on- ce again carry the Progressive Conser- vative banner into the next federal election. Fenneil, the incum- bent local Member of Parliament, was ac- claimed the Ontario Ridlng .P.C. Association's candidate at a meeting held last week. This will be the third campaign Fennell has' fought. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1979 when he defeated» Liberal Norm Cafik, then ser- ving as multiculturalism mini- ster. He currently serves a s deputy critic for in- dustry, trade and com- merce in the Tory caucus led by Briam Mulroney. On the local front, Fenneli believes the only major issue wilI be hte Pickering airport site. "The airport is going to come Up," he said in an interview last Thur- sday. Calling the Liberal government's handling of, the situation an "ecoaomîc disaster" the incumbent said that a Tory government would probably scrap the proposai altogether and return the land back to the farmers. 11 think the best op- tion is to rent the land to young farmers and, if after a 1-year period, we find we still don't need the aîrport then give these same young people the option to buy Neilghbourhuod Watch bein organized in CollegeDowns Over 150 local residents'are expected to attend a Neigh- bourhood 1Watch orgamization meeting at the Whitby Municipal Building on Mar. 21. Although this program is being organized for the Colege Downs area, Karen Cattafi, the orgamizing committee chairinan, said that residents from ail parts of Whitby are welcome to attend. .Among those expec- ted to be in attendance are P;C. John Bell of the Durham Regional Police Force's com- munity service bureau; Mayor.Bob Attersley in bis capacity as chair- man of the Durham police commission as weil as representatives, of the insurance in- dustry and a'local lock shop. Cattafi.was herself a victun of a break-in last January and she féels that implementing Neighbourhood .Watch wil be a good, preven- tative measure for bier area. "I was'frigbtened, in- timidated by the idea that someone could break into my home s0 easily, " she, said ad- ding, ."If we can make them (the break-in ar- tists) fée], that the eyes of the world are upon tbemn maybe we can slow them down. " Cattifi hopes to fund her Neighbourhood Watcb program through donations of $2 per household. The money would be used to put up signs, obtain infor- mational literature and purchase two electric engravers that would be sbared by the residents. Homeowners could mark their property in some fashion to make it easily identifiable sbould it ever be stolen. "There won't be any ongoing -expenses," -sbe says, "We're just out to protect each other. Cattifi also had praise for Mayor Bob Attersley and bis efforts to get Neighbourhood Watch programs establisbed throughout the com- munity. "BbAttersley is really promoting Neighbourhood Watch,"1 she says, "and I agree wîth him. We could vir- tually chain off the town with eyes if we wanted The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in*.the council chambers. the land." Fennelî fears that any airport development in north Pickering will produce .another Mirable. If more facilities are needed, there are ways. of ex- panding the Oshawa municipal airport. "But I think Toronto will look after our needs for the next 50 years. " The national part of Fennell's campaign will focus' on economic issues. "The whole thrust of our campaign will be the economy," he said, "If, we get just two- thirds of tbe people who are unemployed back to work we can solve our deficit problem. " Unemployment is costing Canada $50 billion a year, Fennell dlaims., Running against Fen- nel locally for the New Democratic Party will be Geoff Rison, who has gone down to defeat at Fennell's hand twice before. However,- the local Liberals have not elec- ted their candidate and may not do so until after the party's leadership convention is June. Fenneil remarked that he wiil be running against the new Liberal leader and not necessarily the local candidate. A new grit leader will make for a tougher fight. "A new leader is going to make in a tougher. campaign," Fenneil said. "We're goinig to have to work harder." He also believes that the riding's growth over the last few years, will work in bis favor. "IWe have a lot of new people coming in, it's giving us a much broader base of -support than we had the last time." Fenneli expeets to begin active camn- paigning in April and has re-appointed Jerry Moskaluk-as bis camn- paign manager. "We've been in- volved, we've done our job and we're going to fight to keep this riding conservative," he said, "Ilil run on my record. "I'm delighted I'm running again. I'm looking forward to the battie. " Fenneil is predicting a fail election because the new leader will have to settle into the job before going to the country. And the September visit of Pope John Paul II is expected to delay an election cail until Oc- tober.
