The program, in its thirteenth year, "&helps students between grades il and 13 to gain a better understanding of municipal ad- ministration," Michael Gazo, deputy clerk for the Town of Whitby, said inan interview last week. "It is the level of government most affec- tmng people, and for the most part it's not covered -in schools," Gazo said. "Students who have participated in the program In1 the past have indlcated they've found it Worth- while and hèlpful and recommended that council continue the program." This year the program bas taken on an historical theme in keeping with the celebration of the Province of Ontario's Bi-Centennial celebra- tion, Gazo said. One reason for the museum tour was to give the students an insight into life in Whitby 100 years ago to aid them in acting out a mrock council meeting dealing with town affairs of that time period. The positions acted out by the students have already been drawn from a hat, with desigilations of mayor, councillors and depar- tment heads. The mock council meeting will take place on May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Whitby couneil chambers. One half of the Lynde House tour was! condue- ted by Margaret Ken- nedy, who highlighted the, many interestlng features of the musei"nm located at 960 Dun<i,-.y st. W. The house was build by Jabez Lynde around 1812. Lynde, who emigrated from New York State in the early 1800's with his wife Clarissa, son Sylvester and father, acquired ownership of the land in 1811. The home is of Georgian architectural style with Neo-classical features. Gazo cails the Youth and Civic Ad- ministration Program "ivery unique" and feels that other municipalities could benefit by instituting it in their areas. The program is run from March 1 to May 3 every year', with the .14 studen- ts meeting every Thur- sday from 2 to 3 p.m. for seminars and tours.
