On the contrary, it is a time when the F. life of the spirit becomes intensified" 2- 1 was reminded of this quotation recently when I ýC. met with a militant activist named Lucas Peacock. r, Mr. Peacock is wel! towards his 87 birthday, but you k would neyer guess it going by his energy and en- k thusiasm. He had noticed a newspaper report ýt quoting myseif as advocating improved services for ýc senior citizens. Mr. Peacock is in the process of ýc promoting action by local churches to aquire gover- ýs iment iow interest boans, in order to build comfor- ýg table apartments to be rented to seniors at rent 2 levels they can afford. This elderly group of well r motivated citizens, with zeal and competence to aquire suitable sites which would be developed ~,along the lines already suggested., n This is the "Grey Power". I spoke of some years -, ago. Not only are people living longer as nutrition , and medical 'science improves, but these same 1. people are flot content to sit back and leave it to the B young people to make ail the- decisions. Older citizens are going to demand a greater share in the - decision making process particularly as it affects j thieir own future, and I think that is far more - preferable than vegetatingaway, their declining - years. At the other end of the chronological, scale, billions of dollars are spent on servicesto young r people, The Children Services Co-Ordi nating Com- * mittee, has spend the last several months compiling a list of services designed to promote the -well being 0f our young people. Everything from day care to educational services, to family and health services, through justice and correctional services, through recreational and family services. Modemn industrial society in addition to the vast improvements to Our life style in ternis of creature comforts, requires tremendous back up for those Who through no fault of their own are unable to cope with any one of ai! dozen tragedies. The intent of ail this activity, is to discover what duplication exists, and to reduce cost on society by ensuring that the absolute minimum in agency in- volvement, provide that the children get the best possible care, but reducing cost to a minimum., Contrary to niany views whieh would indicate the opposite, there are many single parents, struggling by, earning a living and paying day care and other child protection service, which would dauint ail but those determined not to be -a burden on society. These individuals are usually single women, Who have been left by their husbands to provide for young children. They go to their jobs each day after dropping off their children at some day care centre, and those of us Who have been fortunate enough to avoid this kind of domestic tragedy, should salute their fierce determination to be both mother and father to their children. The Region of Durham has just issued a pamphlet outli ning water and sewer billing information. This information is comprehiensive. Lt might flot make either the cost or the rational behind the systemi any more payable, but it will certainly cause you to be better informed when dealing with any complaints. After several months of intense activity, the downtown business improvement - committee has made its report to its constituents. If the scheme is 1 approved, for the sake of a relatively modest dutlay, the business community will reap enourmous benefits in ternis of enhancement. There is no point promoting an area which would deter prospective customers fromn purchase. At a public meeting called to discuss the matter, the project was received enthusiatically by the business people present. If the matter proceeds, the entire corn- munity will benefit. _______________ y - If . . . . . . . . . . 1 AUCTIONS]
