Durham 579 - 671 Reg on.623 3299 The latest garden equipment offters substantiat improvements By Robert Tracinski John Deere's Lawn and Garden Specialist While styles in gardeffing equip- ment may not change as* rapidly as those in fashion, gardeners now can take advardtage'of a variety of new equipment features designed to save time and effort. In recent years, manufacturers have introduced a series of light- weight, convenient compact tillers, specially designed for use by the cul- tivator of small1 gardens. The jobs that these tillers perform --, from prepar- ing seedbeds in the spring to weeding in midsummer to breaking up garden soul after the faîl harvest - have made the compact tiller one of the backyard gardener's best friends. Don't be misled by the size of these little workhorses. Powered by two- to three and a half-hp engines, these sturdy units can break up sun-baked soil and claw through sod and weed- choked patches of ground. The tilling path may be as parrow as six inches, but a 'chain drive system can give these machines an aggressiveness that belies their smalî size. .As the size of the garden grows, so may the.gardener's need for the pow- er and strength ot a heavy-duty tiller. lncreased horsepower enables these bigger tillers to handle wider sections (>1ground. Large-scale gardener's recommend buying a model with reverse drive ca- pability. This handy feature enables, you to back out of tight corners and maneuver the tiller without strain. If the size of the plot is large enough, even a heavy duty walk-be- hind tiller may flot have ail the fea- tures you need. In that case, it may be time to consider the suitability of a self-propeîled walk-behind unit or a tractor mounted tiller. Self-propeîled tillers use a higher horsepower engine to rotate* the tilI- ing tines and totur the drive wheels. Typically such units have a gear drive system with reverse and a swing out handlebar that lets the gardener walk to one side as he tilîs, rather than in the loose soil directly behind the tiller. Lawn and garden tractors in the 10- to 20-horsepower category have stur- dy frames strong enough to support such heavy attachments as a tiller ranging from 30 to 48,inches wide. These tractors should offer a slow ground speed in what is callèd a &bcreeper" gear. This slow speed helps give the tiller the time and strength nee ded to break up the ground thoroughly in one pass. Some tractors provide a super slow speed in first gear. There is a new hydraulic tilling unit available for the first time this year. This 30-inch John Deere tiller can be mountedeither forward or backward. When mounted backward, the tines turn in couniter-rotation to the tractor drive wheels. The counter- rotation action helps the tiller dig into hard, compacted ground or stubborn turf to tilI more deeply and thoroughly in fewer passes. Forward rotation is best for established seedbeds and pre- worked ground. t 1 ½h M lies North Hwy. 2 Brock Rd., Plckerlng 683.0887 ,à 37 F uchsla's See them Alil at: Robert G. Eckel Greenhouses Hwy.
