Whltby -Oshawa 688-3356571-3400 666-1255 John Walby lt's vital to 'stay cool' (NC) - Your circulatory system pumps cooling blood throughout your overheated body in the same way the cooling sys- te m in your vehicle circu- lates coolant throughout your engine to keep it rm overheating. Your vehicle's engine couldn't operate - in fact, many parts would soon be destroyed - if it weren'tfor the cooling system. An automotive engine runs most efficiently when the coolant temperature is between 82 and 90 degrees celsius. Initially, the coo- Iant helps a cold engine heat Up. As the engine warms to its ideal operat- ing temperature, the cool- ing system then keeps the engine from running too hot. How it worka Like ail systems, the cool- ing system in your vehicle is com prised of a number of interlockcing componients: A radiator through which air passes removes heat from the circulating coolant; a radiator pressure cap, designed to seal the coolant system and raise theboiling of the coolant so it can operate at peak pres- sure; a thermostat to pre- vent the coolant from flow- ing between the radiator and the engine until the motor reaches its proper op- erating temperature; rad hoses,. water jackets and passages through which the coolant circulates; a fan to draw air through the ra- diator, and a water pump to -circulate the coolant.-'ften driven by the same fan beit. .Radiator coolant is a multi-purpose mixture of roughly haif water and half anti-freeze, with water pump lubricant and rust in- hibitors. It should be re- placed at least every second year to ensure your system remains dlean and cools ef- ficiently. Check your owner's manual for the spe- cific instructions on your vehicle. Youcan check the coo- lant level in your vehicle and top it up - but re- member neyer to remove the radiator cap when the engine is warm. Otherwise, you could be seriously scalded. Make regular checks You can avoid annoying cooling system failures by keeping a wary eye on the condition of rad hoses and beits. If hoses become hard and brittie, they are likely to crack or break, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. Your fan beit should be changed when it becomes frayed or cracked. And, if the pulley that drives the fan beit is shiny, have your technician tighten the beit. And finally, pay heed to the hot light on your instru- ment paniel. If it goes on, pull over immediately - it's telling you you've got a cooling systemn failure.: And, to ignore it would be asking for even bigger trou- ble - total engine failure.
